Re: Blown head gasket?
I'm wondering if you got false compression readings when you did your test. Did you do a wet or dry test? The excessive carbon buildup would also give a false reading. You might want to consider doing a cylinder leakdown test to diagnose whether you have a ring problem.
Side note: You will eventually figure out what is going on with your engine...but don't give up! Hey, it's taken me several days just to remove one silly bolt, but I somehow succeed in the end. We're all here to cheer you on!

Re: Blown head gasket?
Hi Denise.
Well here's what I did. After I parked it from a short drive. I removed the plugs and did the compression test. I do not know what wet and dry mean. Please enlighten me. I don't know if I have access to an air compressor with enough PSI to do a leak down test.
Thanks for the encouragement, if this wasn't my only means of transportation it wouldn't be so bad..

Re: Blown head gasket?
if this is a new problem, I would venture a guess that it's related to the repair. Wet and dry compression tests are used to measure cylinder sealing; after a normal (dry) test, a small amount of oil is added to the cyl and another test is taken. Oil will help seal the rings to the cyl, so the readings will be higher depending on the condition of the cyl walls and rings. Big differences indicate a need for overhaul.
Is the vacuum hose attached to your oil breather? Since there was a certain level of muck in your engine, do you think you were able to get most of it out of the oil pan?
Do you have a neighbor or someone you can borrow a small air compressor from? You really need to do a leakdown test

Re: Blown head gasket?
Thanks for the info Mark I can do a wet test to check the difference. I am heading over there after work, (now)
Yes the vacuum hose was attached to the breather.
The upper engine was remarkable clean, as was the oil when I drained it, that's all I really have to go by.
I would think it was related to the repair as well but I am at as loss as to what?

Re: Blown head gasket?
Wet compression test was the same readings.
It took me 3 1/2 hour to get the intake off, that was a horrible job! I dread putting it back!!!!
Here's some pics of the seperator.
I don't know if this is correct but there was a gasket on it before a rubber ring.... but it was deformed...is this supposed to be in there???? Maybe it's not supposed to be there and this is the source of all the belchng of the oil!!!!
with the rubber ring in place
without the ring
the ring itself
both pieces

Re: Blown head gasket?
There should be no other gasket there except for the paper one. Who ever put that "o-ring" there screwed up. I think you found your problem. That "rubber o-ring" looks like a oil cam seal.
Re: Blown head gasket?
that rubber gasket is an oil cap seal, and it shouldn't be in the separator. Changing the intake is a lousy job with the head on the engine. Be sure to seal the water passages on the gasket when you re-install
Re: Blown head gasket?
Now that you have an oil cap gasket, make sure that your oil cap (cover you take off to put new oil in) has a gasket. Flat side out.

YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HAPPY YOU GUYS JUST MADE ME!
Thanks mark ever since I got my Spider I have been sporting this look!!
It was 70 degrees today, now it's in the 20's and will be all week..... damn this is gonna be cold Spider working weather!!
But I am still happy!!
Thanks to all!!!
Clark
PS
This gave me a chance to remove the old A/C bracket and I'll replace it with the correct one, that thing must have weighed 6 or 7 pounds!
When I was cursing and spitting at the intake not coming off and being stuck on the dadgum vapor trap bolt. I noticed that the dipstick tube would turn and whatnot...I turned while pushing down on it and it went down about an inch or more I'd say! I'll bet my dipstick will read correctly now!
(gotta look on the brightside of things ya know)

Re: Blown head gasket?
Well Hot Damn Clark! Sure hope this turns out to be the whole problem. Makes sense though, it sure couldn't be passing by the rubber ring. What a pisser. Pope's right, some of the crap you find done by a PO defies all logic. Guessing where it went instead of finding out for sure. Too bad he wasn't a forum member. A picture of it would have given him the answer in short order!
