I may have mixed my harmonic balancers(I may have done it right ).The car is a 1980 spider, rebuilt 2.0L,1800 intake,32 adfa,e-choke,rebuilt,no emmisions.I have removed the front timing cover,It had the marks on it,and installed the metal pointer style.I'm trying to track down a pinging noise that I have. The number 1 and number 4 piston are at tdc and the mark on the balancer is at zero, according to the pointer. On the dizzy, the rotor is pointing just a couple degrees past the number 4 plug location.(rotating clockwise). When you rev it in neutral I can see the advance diaphram moving about 3-5mm. So far does this sound correct? Are the keyways different in order to accomidate the different position of the timing marks?
The plugs that I have are bosch platinums(I just read here that they are no good and may one source of my pinging)The car starts , idles and sounds great(lite popping between 2000- 5000).However, when you engage clutch and accellerate it will PING/lose power, very very bad.Timing too advanced and wrong plugs??Should I get NGK-bpr6es?
Also, with high comp pistons, should I run only 93 octane gas?
Sorry for rambling on,I'm just trying to get my car on the road for the first time.It has been a frustrating journey and I'm so close to the end.
Thank you all
Ray

Do you know what comp ratio you have? You may have upped the comp ratio more than you thought with the 1800 head and hc pistons. Maybe adding octane booster to the gas if you're not running 93 will help the pinging situation.

The head is a fuel injected 2.0L,Just the intake is from an 1800.I think the pistons are 10.something-1.I cannot remember,it's been a while.
Thanks,
Ray
Just found them they are 9.8-1 the head and block were milled just enogh to clean them up.

Re: Parts interchange?Plugs?Help....pls..
Ray, do you have a timing light? Supposedly the optimum performance is just a little below the ping. If you were at 10BTDC, try 8, still pings, try 6BTDC... Or rotate counter-clockwise a little at a time. Use the 93 also.
Re: Parts interchange?Plugs?Help....pls..
Thank you i'll try that.My brother in law has my timing light at the moment.I should have it back thur.
Thank you

With all that goin on, youll probably want to customize your ignition also! There are alot of options. Are you runnin the 4-2-1 exhaust manifold?
Re: Parts interchange?Plugs?Help....pls..
I do plan on upgrading the exhaust with a header when my cash flow permits.I do have the 4-2-1 right now(The exhaust out the tailpipe is high preasure,is that normal?).The coil is the stock marelli unit(options?).I have seen people convert to a mechancal distributor. Would that be an upgrade for me?
Thanks

I guess you had better describe high pressure, And after you get it running is the time to figgure out what curve youll want.I couldnt guess, but someone may know what works. Once you estimate the total advance range, you can take it from there. A coil upgrade would be good.
