O.K, well after several months of my 79 Spider sitting in my garage, and me debating over what to do with my bad transmission and clutch, my wife and I were looking at houses Friday. I spotted a post 79 (from the tailights) sitting in a carport and terribly neglected. I left a note in the mailbox asking if I could buy it for parts. Got a phone call that night, "$300 and it's yours." It was last driven about 10 years ago. Anyway, I bought it hoping for a good transmission.
The PO is in the hospital, but her brother (and the title) say it is a 1980. Brother says it has a 1977 frame and running gear under it due to excessive rust in the 1980 frame. The dash has the Oxygen Sensor light in it where the hazzard switch used to be, so I am assuming it was a fuel injected 1980. I also noticed something behind the interior back seat driver side quarter panel that I did not see on my 79 (almost like a pump or a large fuel filter). I know the transmission swap will work. Is it possible the wiring harness will work as well? The body is rusted to pieces, but the wiring and carbed engine seem to be in good shape. I cannot try to start it because there are no keys. The serial number is a low CS0-0003.... Maybe it was an early carbed 80? Anyway to really tell? Aired up the tires and trailered it to a friends vacant house where I have started dismantiling it hoping to make up my $300 on ebay and a good used transmission.
I am sure this post is just the beginning of a long streak for me.
Thanks a bunch,
James
My "new 1980/1977" parts car
Re: My "new 1980/1977" parts car
fed cars were carbed in 80, calif cars were FI. Is the underhood tag still on the cowl? That will tell if it's a fed or calif car. The engine harness will be different obviously, but the rest of the harness should work
Re: My "new 1980/1977" parts car
I think the tag is still there. I will look tomorrow.
Re: My "new 1980/1977" parts car
ok, but the PO said the body was an earlier car... so perhaps this won't be accurate?
Re: My "new 1980/1977" parts car
The body is an 80. The engine and frame are around a 77 or 78. I pulled the carb off yesterday. It was a 32 ADFA, so I will be having that rebuilt, and switching from the rod linkage to the cable linkage that came off my parts car. On switching from rod to cable, is all I do is unhook the cable that runs from my existing rod linkage from the pedal assembly and through the firewall? I have already removed the assembly from my parts car.
Thanks,
James
