If you're at the office, you're probably not dressed to crawl under the car, but I'd check that there is fuel getting to the pump. Could be vacuum from not venting, or a plugged filter? Take off the fuel filler cap and see if you hear a noticeable sucking sound.

maybe the tank is empty? You won't hear a sucking sound with the cap off, the pump doesn't generate than type of suction. The hose to from the tank to the pump could have a leak, that will prevent the pump from pulling fuel in or the pickup filter could be restricted. The carb should have enough fuel in it to start and run for a few minutes even without the pump working

Where is the pickup filter?
I don't see any leaks...
It died when I was driving...just stalled. I then started to move the pump around and check that the ground was tight (it was)...and then it started and drove about 500 yards and then died again. I bypassed the filter at the carb to no avail.
There is 1/2 tank of gas.
Out of ideas.

I'm not clear on this, is the pump running with the key on?

Yes...the pump is on.
Fuel lines are full of gas...the filter is empty though.

the filter won't be full, only partially full. If there's no fuel, maybe a kinked hose?

I can suck fuel directly from the tank with no problem and I connected the pump directly to the tank and it won't pump any gas....I think the pump is bad even though it is running.
What pump does it take?
Can I get one locally?

If the pump turns on...it should be sucking..Yes?
I am baffled here....could it be something with the tank itself?

Not necessarily. I had an electrical fuel pump failure from last year to prove it. You could hear it just churning away, but it was not pumping any fuel. Replaced the fuel pump, and all was fine. I'm not certain that this is your problem, but just throwing that out there. A new generic fuel pump can be had from your local autoparts store for $35 or so, and may be worth a try.

To clarify: I did not mean that you'd hear a sucking sound with the cap off. I meant that if you had a problem with the venting system a vacuum would be created in the tank, preventing the flow of fuel. If this were the case, when you remove the cap it immediately sucks air in to fill the vacuum.
I guess I need to be more careful how I word things.
