Just put a new clutch in my Fiat and it makes a fairly loud "SSSSHHHH" noise when first engaging.I have put several clutches in cars over the years and I have never experienced this before. My friend who actually did the work says it should go away soon, but I have put over 100 miles on it and it has not changed. What do you guys think? He did resurface the flywheel.I cant remember the brand of clutch but it was made in Italy.I think it was something like COMA or COMO.

Is it possible the flywheel is warped? Maybe you should've had it balanced and trued.

Wow!Over 50 views with only 1 reply!I am going to stop by my friends shop tomorrow to have him listen to it...I guess he is just going to have to take it apart AGAIN!I think there must be a rivet sticking out a bit...anyone ever have that happen.
I know it really doesnt matter and untill he takes it apart its just a guessing game but sometimes thats half the fun.

I think you hit the nail on the head Art. Besides good ole' Denise, the rest of us probably didn't respond because it is a guessing game. However, if a guess is OK with you, I go with throw out bearing. The sound you describe (if a sound can be accurately described) sure sounds like a bearing to me.

I just rebuilt my trans and am putting it back together today, so you are ahead of me on this one. Sounds like a throwout bearing under load making noise, but just a guess.
Re: New clutch making noise
Thanks for the responses. This thread is just for fun to see who can guess it right. My friend said the new throw-out brg looked really nice,he said it was bigger and "beefier" looking than most. The noise is when the clutch is just about to grab, that's why I think it must be something in the disc....could it be just the type of compound?Hmmm????
Re: New clutch making noise
Since we're all just guessing I'd say that it is just the new disk surface brushing against the resurface and slightly rough flywheel. But I think it should have gone away by now. So if it's not that simple I vote for a loose rivet.

Re: New clutch making noise
I've never seen a loose rivet on a new disc, and that wouldn't make that type of noise. A loose rivet on new lining would just sink below the level of the lining
Re: New clutch making noise
Mark,
I agree that that is very unusual but I have seen it on brake shoes, a long time ago I admit. I don't have any idea what it might sound like, or if you could hear it at all.

if the lining was thin, then the rivet could contact the surface. But with a new lining the rivet couldn't be long enough to touch anything
