Plugs and Wires

Post by fiasco »

With my recent water snafu, I have the plugs out, and I figured I might as well take the opportunity to change the plugs and the wires. So, of course, I have a couple of questions.

The plugs I pulled out are, in cylinder order:
#1 NGK BPR6EY
#2 NGK BPR6ES
#3 NGK BPR6EY
#4 NGK BPR3EY

The threaded portion on the ES is noticeably bigger around, and shorter than the EYs. Is it typical to have two different sizes? I can also see, in the engine, that the hole for the plug on cyl #2 is visibly bigger than the other three (which stands to reason, since the plug itself is bigger).

Also, How would I determine if the plugs really need to be replaced?

Now for a question on the wires. The wires have printed on them "7mm Premium Silicone Magnetic Suppression". No brand name that I can find. They also appear (to my untrained eye) to have been cut to length and had the metal ends crimped on. This may be why the metal ends came off when I pulled the wires off the plugs (i.e. they weren't crimped on hard enough to stay with the wire). Is this common? If I replace the wires, what specs do I need to look for, and do I need to find particular lengths, or will I need to cut them, or if they are long, should I just leave them long?

Thanks!

Hey Steve
That is odd with the 2 different size plugs, definitely not stock.Maybe a p/o broke a plug, had drill out to to extract and installed helicoil??As long as the heat range is the same,I dont think it is hurting anything.I would keep a spare one in the car though.
All our vendors sell ignition wire sets that are supposed to be ''purpose built''.I bought a set fromIAP that I am disappointed in.The wire are extremely long and look like spaghetti in my engine compartment.I am going to buy a universal set and cut to fit. That is what you have in your car,p/o just didnt crimp well.

You'll have less chance of pulling a wire apart if you twist it back and forth at the plug before you jiggle it loose. Ron gets on to me all the time for not taking the time to properly pull the plug wire and I got the heavy duty Moroso wires.

Thanks - any opinion on the plug wear? If not, I'm just gonna put the old plugs and wires back in. Ran fine with them before.

They look like they are burning fine, from the color.Spray them with a little brake cleaner and clean em up with a wire brush, they should be fine.

I think Mark is right. The difference between the 6ES and the 6EY is Traditional and V-Power. See this link. http://www.ngk.com/results_app.asp?aaia=1104501 I couldn't find anything on the 3EY I am assuming that was a typo.

Check out this vid on how to repair and to get an idea what has been done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntiy8L97Nco

I just put the old plugs and wires back in. I've had about enough for one weekend. Time to do something else for a change - like drive.

had the same thing happen to mine this summer. I went to napa and they had a kit with a new sleeve. I had to re tap mine as the hole had become stripped. works fine now.
