Just bought a Crane XR700 on eBay. Before I install it, which coil do I use with it? I was looking at the PS40. Also, do I need a ballast resistor, or does the PS40 come with one? I have about 2 more weeks before I get the car back from crazy body shop guy, so I'm trying to line up all my pieces/parts for what's left of my winter projects.
I want to replace the coil while I'm at it, since I have no idea how old the one that's in the car now is. I have a new cap and rotor and wires which I did last year. Any other suggested parts would be appreciated.
Got a new XR700 for 31 bucks on eBay, woohoo. Best auction win to date.

Re: Crane XR700 Questions
The IAP catalog says to use the blue Bosch coil, p/n 0120, with the Crane XR700. External ballast resistor not required, according to their blurb.

Re: Crane XR700 Questions
I use the original Fiat coil with Ballast resistor, . . . and I was confused by the Crane written instructions. I called Crane for tech support, and they told me how to connect it. I'll try to remember to post the connection instructions tonight when I get back home to see what I did. In case I forget, give me a call.

Re: Crane XR700 Questions
As my previous post mentioned, I'm using the Crane 700 with the origianl Fiat coil (1.5 ohms) with external ceramic ballast resistor (.9 ohms), for a total series resistance of 2.4 ohms. (1970 spider)
The Coil (+) is connected to the Crane Red (+), and also the spider's Blue/Black wire
The Coil (-) is connected to one end of the External Ballast Resistor.
The other end of the External Ballast Resistor is connected to the Crane Yellow (-) wire and to the spider's Brown wire.
The Crane Black wire is connected to Ground.
20,000 trouble free miles with this set=up, but I still carry a spare distributor with points and condensor, just in case. It sure is nice not to have to gap the points and adjust the timing all the time as the points wear.

Re: Crane XR700 Questions
Thanks, I'll print these up and keep them, since my car is still in pieces, although it will be ready in 3 weeks. Crazy Dave says 2 weeks, so if I add one for good measure I'll be driving it home in mid-March.
Re: Crane XR700 Questions
sounds great Tony. i am happy for you; and that is a great price on that Crane unit. you will be really thrilled when you can dump those points...no more tinkering around.
Re: Crane XR700 Questions
until the electronics fail, then it's "grab the points from the glove box" to get home
