Cam Box Torque Specifications

Post by Flyingthere »

I need to remove the right cam box and replace the gasket to stem the flow of oil. Does anybody know the torque specifications for the bolts holding it down. In addition if anybody has any experience with this and can tell me if their are any hidden issues I should know about it would be appreciated. It seems that after completing an oil change a number of leaks have shown up and I am working to resolve each of them, I will share more about some real interesting mechanical repairs completed by a mechanic, many years past, when I get it opened again and remember to take pictures.

are you SURE it is the cam box that is leaking? unless you already tinkered with those cam boxes..the leak is most likely elsewhere.

could it be the cam box covers? those tend to leak, and sometimes profusely. new rubber gaskets around the covers, and new gaskets under the cam cover bolts are a must, and the torque spec is fairly light (don't crack the covers).

If you are leaking from that joint (I agree with Mike; clean the area and recheck to be sure. It is more likely the cam box cover or "wet" exhaust stud), 21 ft. lbs. on the bolts securing the cam boxes to the cylinder head. Tighten incrementally, starting from the center like you would the cylinder head. New gaskets are a must. I like the red spray Permatex gasket cement for this type of gasket and surface. Note the washers under the bolts. There are two; one flat, one spring. Observe the orientation of the spring washer (bump side up). You should have the valves re-adjusted after you perform this procedure.

caution... be sure you understand the difference between a cam cover bolt and a cam box bolt!

21 foot pounds on a cam cover bolt will send you off looking for new cam covers.

Thanks guys, I have fixed the cam cover leaks and will send some interesting pictures when I open it up again. The seal in the distributor is leaking and the cam box at the head is leaking. I will however clean it up and double check to ensure it is leaking before I start disassembly.
