1979 fluid levels

Post by KNOTSANE »

While waiting on my factory shop manual to arrive, I'd like to do some work on the car. What I need to know is what are all the proper fluid levels for my 79. I figure I can get all that changed before changing out some movable parts. Thanks for the help.

full, full, full and full. Oh yeah, not over full but full.

the hardest one to achieve for most newbies is the coolant. send me an email and i will send you a specific step-by-step on how to properly attain the coolant fill level, and a very good alternate method. one gallon undiluted antifreeze plus about another gallon of water.

the brake fluid has its own "fill to here" line on the reservoir.

both the transmission (manual) and the rear differential have two plugs, one for in and one for out. of course, jack up the car LEVEL and fill each until no more will go in... with the proper lubricant....especially the tranny. they both take over a quart, so buy two quarts each.

oil capacity will depend on the filter you use, if you use a remote filter kit, etcetera... use the dipstick to be sure..generally 4-4.5 quarts us.

don't forget the steering box, use rear differential gear oil for that one, 90 w

Thanks Mike that will help a great deal. Just got back from Auto Zone down here and got 1 gallon of Shell Rotella T, a bosch oil filter and a inline fuel filter and some HEAT.(the stuff you put in with your gas after it is drained and refilled to deal with any moisture that may have gotten in the tank or lines while it sat up) This should keep me busy until I can deal with the coolant, trans, etc.... Thanks a bunch
