Wanted: Techniques for removing Aux Gear from shaft

Hey everyone,

I am trying to remove my Aux Gear and am finding very difficult to get any leverage to do so. I was wondering if any of you out there have a special technique for doing this or is it just one of those things that you have to fight ?

first remove the bolt in the middle, then it should come off easily :)

I assume that it is the bolt that you are having trouble removing??

I have been successful with taking an old timing belt, and wrapping it around the pully like a strap wrench. You can loop the open end of the belt around one of the cam pulleys to secure it, or maybe both cam pulleys, if it will reach, to spread the load.

NO KIDDING ! Gee wiz..... Mark your humor escapes me on this one. I kinda thought that was a given....... Yes I am referring to removing the bolt. I can't seem to get enough leverage against the gear to get the bolt loose.....

Ahh! the bolt! why didn't you say so? I prefer to use an impact, but even with that it's much easier to leave the belt on, then break all of the bolts loose.

Or leave the bolt on and break all the belts.. lol

just kidding.

Try double wrenching it. meaning put the box end of one wrench on the bolt, then with another box end wrench, wedge the open end of the first wrench into the box end of the second. and give it a solid push.

ok.. thats about clear as mud.

I don't know how to describe it any clearer... but I've broken loose huge rusty pump bolts using this method, when an impact wrench at 160 psi and a 1" chuck couldn't.

I believe what Ryan is saying is that those things are on there pretty tight. Recommended torque is 87 ft-lbs for the larger bolts that that are in most of these pulleys (I believe that the earlier years had a smaller bolt). It's best to leave the timing belt in place to keep the pulley from turning, and then you may have to put the car in gear or use some other way to keep the engine from turning.

And, like Ryan was saying, it's easier if you have a bigger wrench. Either a longer breaker bar or a cheater pipe over the end of a smaller size ratchet (if you don't mind breaking your ratchet!), or Ryans techique of putting two wrenches end to end to get a longer torque arm. For Ryans tip, you need to lock the open end of one wrench with the closed box end of the other wrench. Don't use cheap wrenches for this, or you may be lying in the floor with a couple of broken wrenches!
