1980 head variations

Post by wengr »

hello, would a head from a 1980 carbed car be different in any way from a head from a 1980 FI car? and if so in what ways?

Yes a 1980 carb Head is different from a 1980 FI head.

FI head has two coolant sensors, no air pump or Reed Valve port(s) and no passage for EGR. Much Cleaner Head.

1979/1980 Carb Head has only one coolant sensor port, (The other is screwed into the Coolant Neck), One or two Air Pump or Reed valve ports depending if car came equipped with air pump or just reed valves.

Carb Head has a passage for the EGR near the #1 cylinder. Causing the combustion chamber for Cylinder #1 to have a different shape than the other three.

Why are you asking?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I found a 1980 head offered for sale, and wondered if it would work on my 83. don't want to have to rely solely on the sellers info.

the 1800 head is a great performance upgrade for the carbureted '79 or '80 two litre engines.

if you find a two litre carb'd head for sale, it is prolly the cast off from this conversion.

the ebay head I mentioned is the bare 1800 head only. when you do an 1800 head conversion, will the cam boxes from the 2L head fit the 1800 head or do you need to replace the entire top end? and does the intake fit so you can keep FI?

fuel injection is beyond my reach. it has something to do with computers, which i abhor....although i believe the 1800 head does nothing to improve a F.I. engine performance (willing to wear a flame suit)

the cam boxes will exchange

everything interchanges, including the valves and the .5 compression bump helps the FI motor just as it does the carbed engines
