Timing Query

Post by crafty »

Hey,

I have just replaced the head gasket on my 1981 spider. When we aligned the cam marks prior to removing the belt, the crank pulley did not line up at top dead centre. It was about 30 degrees behind where the markings indicated it should be. Do I leave it where it is or do I turn the crankshaft to line up prior to putting the new belt on?

Cheers,

Glenn.

You definitly want the timing correct. Sounds like you could just turn the crank gently by hand (socket) without much worry of contacting a valve (or aux. cam...or maybe the 2L is non-interferance?) since it is only 30 degrees off. But just be vet careful of you encounter any resistance. The aux cam mark (hole) should point to around one o'clock. And make sure nothing moves when you put the belt back on.
