smog equip

Post by psg »

On my '78 spider 1800 there is on the head, parallel to the spark plugs a four legged contraption with fittings into the head and has a hose connected to the top leading back to the cannister. The contraption is broken at three different braze points. There does not seem to be a replacement part... NC says my smog equipment most be in place even if it does not function properly to pass inspection. How have you bright ones handled this type of dilemma? If I plug the four holes in the head what do I do with the hose coming out of the cannister to avoid showing it is missing? I am presuming if I do not connect these items it will have no impact on the car running. Any thoughts?

psg,

First - are you a fan of French soccer, or is that just a coincidence?

Now to your question. Below are some pics of how all those little pipes on top of the engine connect to one another. If you are required to have the equipment in place, my suggestion is to try to find a replacement from one of the guys on the forum who has removed it from an exempt vehicle. I'd suggest trying Mark Allison (So Cal Mark), or Matt Scarton (manoa matt), or maybe Ryan Wells (SpiderHead). There may be others as well. You can also post in the Parts Wanted section - there is a very good chance that someone will have one to offer you at a very reasonable price.

I actually have one sitting in my garage on an engine that belongs to So Cal Mark, otherwise I'd just send it to you.

And no, disabling this equipment will not have "no effect" on how well your car runs. Disabling will cause your car to run better. What we typically do here in Cali is hook everything up for the Smog Check, and then remove the belt from the smog pump which makes all the various accoutrements little more than decoration (at least that's what I did). Whatever you do, though, don't put a radiator flush TEE in that smog hose and force water into your EGR system (again, that's what I did).

Good luck!

what you're referring to is the air injection manifold and it connects to the diverter valve, not the cannister. New ones are not available as you've found. Good used ones are a little hard to come by here in Calif, but should be plentiful in states where smog checks aren't required. The car won't run any different with or without it, but emissions will be much higher if you plug if off. Air is injected after the exhaust valve, so that's why it doesn't affect how the engine runs but CO is reduced substantially

What is that pretty thing that looks like an engine......... I thought they were supposed to be black and greasy looking. I missed the comment on french soccer... I will search for the manifold... and the hose, that is a joke for my viewing pleasure; right?

You may be able to answer another question, on the orange head cover you have a part marked "that thing" on the front of the engine. I noticed yours has a small vacuum hose attached to it. Where does it lead to? thanks. psg

"proper" disabling will cause the engine to perform as it was originally intended before the italian engineers were forced to add emission equipment before the car could be sold in the USA.

Steve - is that orange crackle paint?

PSG (from Wikipedia): "Paris Saint-Germain Football Club or PSG, is a French football club based in Paris. Their home stadium is Le Parc des Princes. Paris Saint-Germain has been playing in the French Ligue 1 since 1974, the current championship record." http://www.psg.fr/en/Accueil/0/Home There is also a PSG rugby club, but I'm more of a soccer fan myself. 8)

Not crackle paint! The cam covers weren't real smooth when I painted them Chrysler Hemi Orange in honor of the upcoming Fiat/Chrysler partnership.

No - the garden hose on the EGR is not a joke - it is a painful memory. Fortunately, nothing bad came of it and the car ran fine till I emptied the oil and seized up the bottom end, resulting in the pretty orange engine I have now.

The vaccum hose off the EGR thingy (no idea what it does) goes to the carb. In the last orange-engine picture above, you can see the vac hose running off the thingy to the carb where it connects just above and to the right of the fuel mix screw.
