Auxiliary Shaft

I have a 1975 124 Spider 1.8 engine and I am in the proccess of replacing the timing belt. I have read that this shaft must be lined up pointing straight up with the cams and crank being set to their pointer marks and TDC. Why does this shaft have to be aligned at all if it only drives the oil pump. The distributor runs from the exhaust cam.

If the shaft is not lined up properly the crank ,connecting rod will hit it and break it and you will lose oil pressure.

the aux shaft has a lobe on it to drive a mechanical fuel pump. It's that lobe that can interfere if it's not timed right. Line the spot on the gear with the tensioner pivot bolt

I lost the timing belt on my 2000 and the crank did hit the Aux shaft lobe and bent the Aux shaft. Luckily the Crank shaft was not damaged. I was not able to find an exact replacement for the 2000 Aux shaft so I ended up using an earlier version of the shaft. There were at least three different version of the Aux shaft manufactured. There may have been more.

I think that the one on the left was from a 1400, the center one from an 1800 and the one on the right is the damaged one from my 2000. The one in the center was sent to me as a replacement part but it would not work because the fuel pump lobe is much bigger than the one on the 2000 Aux shaft. The crank shaft, however, did clear the thicker main part of the shaft. Since the 2000 is fuel injected that fuel pump lobe is not used or useful, I cut the lobe off of the center Aux shaft and plugged the oil galley that was exposed and used it in the 2000 engine. It seems to work OK.

Steve,

Get a manual and check the position of the aux shaft before you button it all up. For my '76, the mark on the pulley was at roughly 1:00, not straight up.

My italian is a bit rusty but I think it is PMS = Punto Morto Superiore = TDC
