Choke cable knob came out

Post by mosu »

Hi guys,

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but this weekend I pulled a little enthusiastically on the choke knob and remained with it in my hand. I tried to figure out how to detach the cabin end of the cable, but I couldn't. Can anyone please help a newbie out with some advice on how I can reattach the knob back onto the cable? :)

There's a product called "J B Weld" that is available in hardware and auto stores. It is a two-part epoxy that adheres to just about everything.

That won't solve my problem yet...I don't know how to detach the passenger compartment end of the cable from that little bracket that holds it. After I have it detached I'm guess I just have to pull back the cover enough to expose the cable and then I can bust out the JB Weld or a pair of pliers.

Are you referring to the throttle cable? it's not the choke BTW it's used to control a low idle at warm up and as a "cruise control as well. JB weld I doubt would hold up long, I'd see who had a used one that was available.

There is a mounting tab that is spot welded to a cross bar under the dash. The tab hangs down and the cable housing passes thru it. The tab has a square hole. If you lay on you back and look up you will see a tabs on each side that need to be pressed in before the cable housing can be removed.

The end of the knob that pulled out should have two small holes. Detach the other end of the cable so you can pull some back out at the housing. Feed the cable trough the holes and turn it back on itself. It must be slim and neet or it will bind and you will pull the knob out again OR it won't work at all. You can try soldering the cable to the knob.

Thanks Matt, I felt the square plastic piece behind the holder but had no clue how to detach it without a caveman approach. I will try what you said and report back.

TulsaSpider: 74 and earlier models had cable actuated chokes. The cable you're referring to is on the right side of the steering wheel, and the older model had an identical looking one on the left. Symmetry at its finest :). You pull it out to set the choke at a particular level, and twist it to lock it there. As the engine warms up you have to progressively push it back.
