is this high , as in price?

Post by fiat218 »

Typically a full build up with high comp pistons and head work is ~ $3500-3800 ish. Overbore size 1608 pistons are a little harder to come by. I have a few sources but they are special order. The 1608 typically have fairly decent CR to start with. They are not really torque motors but they rev like crazy. My thoughts would be to try to run your existing pistons if your bores are still within spec. I have Dave's rings in stock for the 80mm bore engines and I would likely use the oversize rings I have and size them specifically to your bores after a light honing. I would recommend a full engine balance, flywheel lightening, large intake valves (stock exhaust valves) and a mild performance cam on the intake side only. That coupled with a pair of Weber IDF dual carbs would really make the motor sing. Also would advise taking your single-point style distributor and performing the Crane XR-3000 optical pick-up conversion, as your single-points distributor has a very good mechanical advance curve already

THIS WAS ALL said from a guy in ohio that works on theses engines

This estimate is in line with what I'll end up spending on a similar motor.

While many Spiders are still available for a few thousand dollars, they are much more expensive to restore than, say, a similar-era Ford or Chevy. It's all about quantity; a few dozen pistons per year vs. several thousand.

The $3500 quoted price is with oversized HC pistons. For a 1608, you'll have to have those custom made and you're looking at around $800 for four pistons. What is he quoting for refreshing the engine using the original pistons? The 40 IDFs will give you a decent boost for the money, but you're looking at quite a bit there unless you luck out on a used set with manifold. You can also get a good boost by replacing the dual plane intake manifold with a single plane (early 1800 engine) and running a decent 2bbl carb like a 34 DMSA.

Good point! That motor in the for sale section sounds awesome! And you would still have the original to rebuild, sell ,or strip for parts.
