fuel rail\ injector rubber questions

Post by wengr »

I need at minimum new injector hoses, and a new fuel rail to return line rubber hose. I'm not finding the return line rubber hose, any ideas? Also I have some questions about the injector hoses - I see the vendors are offering kits that will cap at the injectors but clamp to the rail. About $35 for four small caps. can you simply clamp at the injectors if you use the correct style of clamp? if not, can you cut the caps off the original hoses and reuse? I don't understand how these caps work, can you diy install them or do you need to take them to a hydraulics shop or ? Also while on the subject of fi, while my intake is on the bench, would It be foolish to not replace the 8 injector seals? Or is the conventional thinking - if it's working and not leaking don't mess with it? car has 77k miles. thanks greg

I have a VW place down the street and he supplies me with my fuel hose. The FI hose has 35 + psi in it so "normal" hose is not really going to do. The short hose from the rail to the injectors are diy but a bit of a pain, take the rail off it's easier. The caps just make it a bit harder to remove the hose. There are barbs at the connections so the hose does not pull off. I cut with a box knife down to the base and dig around till all the hose is off. The caps then come off and are binned. Use the fuel hose clamps as normal hose clamps I was told can pinch, not good with 35+psi. Replace all injector hoses about an hour or so.
Have fun

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply. so a couple feet of the proper hose and 8 proper fi clamps and I'm good to go - that sounds good to me. greg

I bought IAP's kits, but ended up returning them. Just get the correct hose & you'll be set. I think it's 7mm f.I hose, I got from Iap. I used a hobby knife to cut the hose under the hats so I could get it off.

you can clamp both ends, just make sure you use banded type clamps instead of the normal screw type clamp

Thanks for the replies. What about the injector sealing rings? Should I replace them? they were not leaking but the manifold is on the bench now.

I would also recommend replacing the seals. When I did my fules hoses, I also sent mey injectors out for cleaning. Car was running OK, but I figured they are 25+ years old and already out of the car, why not get them cleaned/tested. I sent them to http://www.witchhunter.com. They also replace the pintle caps, which were pretty rough looking.
