Mark, I believe that the Alfa 1750 - 2l motors are aluminum head/blocks with drop in iron sleeves. This makes them easy to rebuild.

There is very little the same. They both have twin camshafts and eight valves, that's about it.
Alfa is an aluminum wet-liner block; FIAT is cast iron with bored cylinders. Alfa is chain driven internal gearing; FIAT is belt driven, external driven. The intake is on the opposite sides.

Generally the Alfa engine can produce more power but is not cheap to build up. So by that measure (more power) the Alfa engine is more sophisticated. It is also harder to rebuild and needs more care in the build up. Once its done though its a pretty bulletproof engine.
