Timing Belt Question
I have a 1980 Spider that I am converting to FI. In the process I discovered that at some time in the past, the 2000 cc block has been replaced with an 1800. I figured I would need a timing belt for an 1800, but the new belt for an 1800 (Goodyear Gatorback #40020) is about an inch longer than the old belt. The part# on my old belt is 4182426. According to the info I have, later model timing belts are a little more than an inch longer (55.5 inches vs. 54.77 inches) Does anyone know the proper length the timing belt should be for an 1800 with a 2000 head? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

For a 1.8L block, you need a 1.8L timing belt, regardless of the head. Count the teeth on the belt. The 1.8L should have 146 teeth. The 2.0L has 148 teeth, and the 1438cc has 144 teeth. It sounds like they gave you a 2.0L belt.

Your original Goodyear part number was correct. The 1800 timing belt, Goodyear Gatorback belt is part #40020 with 146 teeth and a length of 54.75 inches.
The 2000 Goodyear Gatorback belt is part number 40068 with 148 teeth and 55.5 inches
Check the box number against the belt number to make sure they did not put the wrong belt in the wrong box.

Thanks for the info guys! I had a Goodyear #40020 with 148 teeth! New one should be here Tuesday. Anyone else heard of mis-numbered belts from Goodyear?

What are the chances of that! Good thing there are FIAT gurus out there who know how many teeth your belt should have.

. . . . not to mention what a bear it is to count 140 some odd teeth! You get up to around 113 or so when the phone rings, or your wife asks you a question, then you're wondering, "Was that 113 or 114??". Aaaaaaaah, gotta start all over again!

Doh!!! I just went to install the t-belt I got from Vick's on my 1438 and it's too long! I remembered this post ant counted the teeth, 146! Those guys are killing me, 2 weeks ago I ordered a head set and it had no head gasket in it.

Usually I have all sorts of odd gaskets left over from the 'set' - actually, I have a drawer full of odd gaskets. I suppose now I have a Spider, I should crack the drawer open and see if any of the gaskets/seals are useful after all (most of my 'spares' were from 128 sets, but never fitted a 128).
