Best Way to get engine to TDC

Post by tonyfromjersey »

This may seem like a stupid question, but here goes. I'm going to do my electronic ignition this afternoon and it says to make sure the engine is at TDC before moving forward. What is the easiest and/or most efficient way to crank my engine to TDC? Do I need any other tools that I don't have, I have sockets up to 22mm. I finally have a few hours to myself to tinker with the car. When it stops raining I'll get some new photos up.

If you don't want to buy the inch and a half socket that fits the crank nut, put the car in third gear and push it until the cam marks and crank mark line up, the rotor should be pointing to #4 plug contact inside the cap. Take the time to mark your crank indent with a little light colored paint or white out, it will be easier to see the mark when you are timing the car. if you don't succeed the first time you are probably one tooth off in either direction.

Hey did you get your car running with the electronic ignition? I just put mine in and no luck. doesn't look like I've done anything wrong. but will not start  I put in a Crane Fireball XR 700 Ignition.

Running like a champ with Crane XR700, PS40 coil, etc. Did you put the rotor back in? I almost forgot that part until I was cleaning up and putting away tools, etc. I set the timing at 10 degrees BTDC and its running great. I want to mess with the timing and advance some more this weekend. I followed the instructions to the letter and no issues of note.

I did have some issues with starting it when the points were in. So maybe nothing too big to worry about. I'll get back at it in the morning and let you know how it goes. First thing is "GO BUY A TIMING LIGHT  "

To get the engine to TDC I took plug out of # one cilinder and felt for air preasure. (compretion stroke and both sets of points were open. Now that I have tried to start the car, everything is not lined and I can't even verify that the electronic ignition is working.

Ground wire had bad contact. Fixed that and car fired right up. Ajusted timing and away we go.
