Let's Play 'Name That Tune'. Listen & tell me what's wrong

Post by velozi »

Ok, so here is the deal. Listen to the posted file and tell me what you think it is wrong. Here are the details:

-Out of the many sounds, I am interested in figuring out the one that sounds like gasping for air or drowning in water.
-Sounds the same at low or high RPM.
-Same sound cold or hot engine.
-Engine runs good and it is a recent new sound.
-Sounds loudest on top of the engine where the heater hose connects.
-The sound in the background is a sticky valve but that is another issue.
-Cooling system if full, was bled and engine doesn't overheat.

Ideas? Thanks.

That is seriously weird - the gurgling sound is so loud that I can scarcely hear the engine running. I would have thought that all other noises would drown out a water gurgling sound.

Without a doubt, it has to be air in the cooling system. What is worrying is how it might be getting there. If you had a really slight leak at a hose connection, could that let air in but not water out?

If you switch off the engine when hot, does the cooling system still hold pressure, say, one hour later? (Removing the radiator cap, you would expect a hiss).

To get a really severe amount of air in the cooling system, you could have a blown head gasket...

I guess what you need to do is bleed the system again, and keep an eye on the level over a week or so.

Thanks, I will bleed the cooling system again next week and see if it cures the sound.

The good thing is that last weekend I changed the motor oil and it came out dark and normal. No foam, white residue or coolant in it.

Keep you posted on the progress.

RESOLUTION

Since I recently moved from an ADFA to ADF with a Sprint Air box the crankcase breather hose was on the side of the engine wall. Since it was hidden inside the wall I could not see it but heard a faint noise around the area. Took it out and the loud noise was discovered.

A small K&N air filter from PepBoys for $10 fixed the issue and made the end hose look nice.
