How to remove timing Pully, 82 Pininfarina

Post by HAWKER »

Well, I purchased a 38mm socket for the job but, that bolt will not budge. I figure that I need it out for more clearance as I proceed with the engine pull. I have a nice breaker bar but I broke the timing pully trying to brace it to keep it from rotating. I really layed into it awaiting knuckle distruction, but I had pulley distruction instead. I and thinking that I will leave it on and find an impact wrench once I get the engine out. I also hope that that timing pully replacement is out there somewhere. On a side note, I had the Witch Hunter resource in Washington state clean and test my fuel injectors. They did a very nice job. There paperwork did state that I needed to get them back in the car within 30 days in order to keep them from possibly clogging. I do not know, but this project does not need more pressure. I figure she will all be back togeather for the first snowfall.
Thanks, you gentlemen are great. I hope I can contribute. I hope my woes has not destroyed my creditability.

Read this thread: http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... 55434d1901

I'm sure if you put those injectors in zip lock bags they will not get clogged, but what do I know I'm a carb guy.

I probably have that pully, is it a 3 belt version? I'll be in Chicago at the end of next month May 28th thru 31st. I could deliver it then. matt.scarton@gmail.com

A call to Witch Hunter may be in order Hawker. I have a sneaky suspicion that any cleaning agent residue needs to be flushed out before the 30 days, or it may start to jell. Just guessing here, but I'd call to be sure.

Thanks guys, and especially Matt! The referenced thread was really informative and a little disinhearting. Taking off this pulley seems to be a real bear. There is even some apparent confusion as to the direction of turn to loosen. This baby is so tight, I can see how some guys would think they are going the wrong way. I am gona stick with the lefty loosy concept. Nothing like going after it with an impact wrench in the wrong direction. Eveb with the radiator out there is no room for an impact wrench. I am even wondering why not wait till I have it out,but then you need and impact wrench for sure. Well, another 200 dollar tool for one job. The neighbors love me. That 38mm socket with a half inch drive is not in real demand. Oh Boy....
Matt, I will take you up on that offer for the three belt pulley. as the one that is still hangiing by parts on the front of the engine still is a three belt item. I think the third belt is for the air compressor drive, which, the system has been removed.
Let me know how much as I have no confidence I will be able to find this item at Vicks or international.
Finally, I was hoping that you or some of the more salty Fiat Yota, read my post about the sheared trasmission support bolt problem. I know that you can fix anything but this anticipated problem has me troubled. Honestly, that is why I just wanted to pull the engine only and work with the trans I have. If i drop the mounts, I will loose the mount bolts that are now on their last legs.
Thanks again,

hawker,

i'd suggest that you hook up with the CHI-FLU folks. they love wrenching together. My buddy Lee leads a group of Fiatsu that is primarily Spider or X 1/9 owners all around the Chicago area. their website is: http://www.meetup.com/chicagolandfiatandlancia/

LOL... "think they are going the wrong way" :)
Two of us found that our nuts were DEFINITELY left-hand-thread, no confusion once it's off ;)
However, we actually had a 22mm bolt rather than 38mm nut. Hopefully, that should be the deciding factor on whether it's left-hand or right-hand thread.

Sometimes I remove the sump, especially if the gasket looks like it might be leaking. That way, you can wedge the crankshaft with blocks of wood and get a lot more torque onto that nut without the hassles of holding stuff in the ring gear, etc. The sump ends up nicely repainted and refitted with a new gasket. Good opportunity to clean the oil pump pickup too.

The other way I succeed is with the long bar - and flicking the starter. A bit shade-tree (as you guys might say!) but has worked several times for me.
