Fuel inlet popped out

While driving on the highway the fuel inlet popped out of the carb. It's a weber 32ADF single two barrell. I was able to pop it back in and get the car home.
What holds that piece in? The hose was still attached to the nozzle on the inlet but the a disc like piece had just came out.
Does the mean the carb is toast?

it is a press fit.

moren' likely toast with jam is where you are at, although i have heard a few guys use JB weld.

I think Mark said you could use a brass hammer to reinstall the connector, maybe he'll chime in. I'm going to tap mine for a screw in fitting.

you can use a brass hammer to tap it back in, but tapping it for a threaded fitting is the intelligent thing to do to prevent a catastrophic fire in the future

Sounds like this is a common problem. What causes it to fail? Poor design? I was getting less than anticipated gas mileage, could this have been the problem?

common problem with all carbs that use press in fittings. VW had the same issue with the Beetle

Possibly the different thermal expansion rates of brass and pot metal, coupled with 30 years of vibration and hose changes. If you don't have a brass hammer then a piece of hardwood or plastic and a regular hammer will do. Should be good for another 30 years.

uhhh, probably won't last 30. Once they come out, they tend to come out easier. Best solution is to tap it and thread in a fitting. All race orgs that I'm aware of require them to be threaded in or you don't get on the track.

I used a wicking loctite to help seal it in, then tapped it firmly in place, then put JB Weld around the outside where it joins the carb housing for extra insurance. It hasn't budged. I agree that a threaded post would be better, but didn't know where to go to get that done.
