coolant pipe deterioration

Post by wengr »

hello on my 83, both metal heater pipes on the firewall, the coolant fitting in the head where the rubber hose connects, and the hard pipe that comes off of the back of the waterpump all have some deterioration where the hoses mount. is this to be expected or is something going on?

Yep, corrosion at those locations is expected. Starts from the inside. Just make sure the heater tube off the back of the water pump is not corroded all the way through or has thin spots.

I replaced my pipe from the water pump. but the exhaust was off at the time. Its not that hard or expensive, and good insurance for the road!

I believe those tubes were discontinued a couple of years ago. To stop corrosion, keep a 50/50 coolant/water mix in the cooling system and change it every two years. Otherwise electrolysis will ruin all of the aluminum in the system

I checked with Bruce ( http://www.fiatparts.com/ ) a couple of months ago and he had new stainless steel ones in stock.

Dang, I can't remember how much he said it was. At the time I was just checking for availability, I didn't get one. I have a spare that was given to me, but it's probably in the same shape yours is in, slightly corroded ends, and build up inside the tube.
