Hi everyone, after a few thousands of km on my Spider, I cheak the oil level on the dipstick and I there a funny smell. Think is gas. Maybe in oil engine?
Any idea of thid mean?

Gas smell in engine oil?
Re: Gas smell in engine oil?
if it's a carbed car with a mechanical fuel pump, the pump could be bad. If it's an FI car, then you could have an extremely rich mixture, leaking injectors or pressure regulator
Re: Gas smell in engine oil?
Hi Mark, my Fiat is FI with electric fuel pump. Other thing, today I put some fuel in it and when I release the fuel cap I had pressure in tank? Do know if its normal?

Re: Gas smell in engine oil?
Sounds just like a problem I'm sorting out with boogiedude's 78. Ran it for a while and had a lot of gas in the oil. Removed the mechanical fuel pump and inspected the diaphram...good. The mechanical pump even has a drain hole on the housing in case the diaphram develops a hole, so gas will not make it into the crankcase. Removed the fuel return line and it was pressurized, gas was spraying out. There was no one-way valve in the return line so I put one in. He is now in the process of blowing out the hard lines and replacing all the rubber on the supply, return, and vapor lines to and from the tank.
His tank is also pressureized, but it shouldn't be.
It could be the "flying saucer" valve in the tank vent line that's up above the rear axle. Can that be eliminated?

Re: Gas smell in engine oil?
the hole in the fuel pump housing isn't a drain for a leaking diaphragm. Without a hole the diaphragm could not move since it would be compressing air.
Re: Gas smell in engine oil?
I had a similar problem, I had a hole in the pump diaphram, so I capped off the mech fuel pump and put in an electric fuel pump and changed the oil/filter... done, but I think I cheated in a not so smart way with my electric fuel pump... I hooked the + to the alternator thinking that it would only run when the ignition was on... it was quick and easily accessible... yet I am thinking that this may be stupid due to the fact that if the diode goes out I could get some serious AC voltage coming at it and pop it... I dont want to hook it up to the ignition either... well, I suppose I could with a relay... what did you guys hook your electric fuel pump up to for the +? I have a '79 Spider.
Re: Gas smell in engine oil?
You should use a relay. What you need is a wire hooked up to ignition voltage and ran to the trunk. The relay can be hooked to the battery with a fuse, and will be close to the fuel pump. The relat will pull less than 1 amp on the ignition wire.
Re: Gas smell in engine oil?
Yo Racydave, I dont undersand what you mean with a relay. I dont thing I have a problem with my fuel pump? It is back pressure in the gas tank with and issue of gas odor in my engine oil.
