Head damage

Post by scarlson »

Not me, the car

Anyway, I decided to spend a little time in the garage this afternoon and take a look at the head of my "rebuilt" engine while the engine is apart. I suspect that the number two and four exhaust valves have been replaced since they don't match the other two. Looking in the port of number four, I found some major pitting  I pulled the valve and took some pics: http://s726.photobucket.com/albums/ww27 ... ad%20Issue

The seat is damaged too

Can this be repaired? Or, should I start looking for another head? What would cause this damage?

The only way that can be repaired is by replacing the seat. Unfortunately since I've got dial-up at home I only took a good look at the pic you have of the seat. Looks like to me if I was to take a guess, is that either that thing blew a head gasket in the past and was left with antifreeze sitting in it(look for pitting in the cylinders) or that was a junkyard head that someone thought they could save. Those definitely look like rust pits to me.

A machine shop would have decide if it can be saved. LIke the above post, I only took a good look at the valve seat, it might--might--clean up without replacement, but again, the machine shop would find out. If seat needs replacing that is no big deal most of the time. I would not be too concerned about the pitting.
Head for a machine shop.

Thanks guys. I'll head to a machine shop to get their opinion and an estimate of the repair. Maybe I'll have a three angle valve job done too.
