Won't start

Post by OrangeCrush »

Have a 75 124 Spider that sat all winter outdoors, was towed to a tech's garage due to lost 1,2,3rd gears for the installation of new re-built transmission, he said it surprisingly fired right up and nursed her to the repair stall.

Job was completed and I drove her home with no problems. Told myself to be patient and not drive her until I completed the interior restoration. Reached a milestone not to mention that where I live has not been very spring/summer like but that day was and threw a seat in and went for a drive. Got to the end of the block and she spit, sputtered and then died.

Bought all new tune-up parts (points, plugs, cap, rotor, condensers) and got her to start and run again but rough and before I could fine tune her she stalled and died only to get the starter to turn over every other time when actuating the ignition switch and at times it sounded like the starter continued to run. Removed the starter and had it tested at a local auto parts retailer and she tested fine. Solenoid looks good too after removal. Someone suggested elsewhere that I should check and clean and maybe add another main ground but yet she fails to start.

Any and all help/suggestions greatly appreciated...

If it's cranking OK now but failing to start I'd suspect dirty or corrupted gas. Assuming it was running OK when it was put away then the culprits that would need diagnosing (timing, compression, spark) probably are still OK. If you've already put new gas in then you could try a fuel additive that is made to remedy water in the system. If the tank has rust flakes, you may have a clogged filter. You can check the condition of the inside of your tank by lifting the sender from the top of it and looking inside.

First thing first, it is probably lacking either fuel or spark. Which one?? Pull a plug wire, put an old plug in it, ground it against block, have someone crank engine and watch plug for spark. Should go zap-zap-zap. If not, find out why and fix it. Now look down carb with choke plate open and pump gas, some should squirt from accelerator discharge nozzle. Pull one of your plugs, should NOT be soaked and black, if it is they need to be replaced. If you have spark and fuel and clean plugs should probably run. If you have spark and fuel and it does not run, you may not actually have good fuel in carb. CAREFULLY dribble a small amount into carb and then see if it now starts. Please do not dribble while someone is cranking engine over.
Again, first figure out what you are lacking, spark or fuel.

sounds like you have a weak battery or poor connections. When starters keep running with the key off that indicates low voltage. Fix that problem first, ya gotta have a fully charged, well-connected battery to begin with. After all, you wouldn't do a kidney transplant on a patient with a dead heart

i too, checked with Nulon. Aerosol cannot be shipped via plane, and that is the only current method from OZ to USA.

Dang! i was trying to get some in time for a novelty display at FFO.

Nice to see that the can's label is easily transferred to such presentable model coverage.. gotta love a cute blonde in a tight jump suit.
