That box is indeed the ECU. The function of the ECU is to respond to input from sensors and complete the ground circuit to the engine, hence the bunch of white wires (ground wire color in our cars.) The FI system has been taken out, so the ECU is just taking up space. Because they are pretty much bullet proof, the ECU can be sold very easily. Not sure how much they're going for however.

I made some progress today. I got the ECU and wiring harness removed intact. Now I have a two inch hole in my firewall to plug, so I'll be going to the auto parts store this weekend.
The best news is that the car still runs! I checked several times as I was disassembling the harness and had no trouble.
Another question: How many vacuum tubes should I have now? I believe I need three. Two to the carb and one to the distributor, but I counted seven. The three mentioned above, two going nowhere, and two to the turbo(?) switches on the sidewall.
