Fiat Apraised value

Post by spider2081 »

Just received my annual property tax bill for our 1981 Spider 2000. The Town of Stratford, CT set the value at $8,357.00. The car is a fairly clean and dependable daily driver with 143,000 miles and it has 28 years of dings and scratches. I haven't called yet to see how they came up with this value but it sure seems high to me. What do you think?

without inspecting the car, I'd say they threw a dart at the board and hit that amount

Ask the people in the appraiser office if they want to buy mine. Then i will come back home and buy 3 or 4 with the money.

Your state has a property tax value on autos? Is this how they determine a license fee? Can you explain

Maine charges an excise (personal property) tax also. Cars, motorcycles, ATV's - you get tagged every year for all of them. Here it depends on the original MSRP. Each year the mill rate goes down, until in the 6th year it hits the lowest rate - .4%.
In addition, you still pay for registration and safety inspection annually.
Cars over 25 years old can be registered as an antique, with much lower excise tax rates. tax for our spider was $15 this year. Antiques are also exempt from the annual safety inspection.

Arizona also bases the tags on a percentage of the original MSRP, with that value dropping each year.
Makes you think twice before going out and buying something new.
Fortunately my new vehicle is 12 years old with 140K on it, and the spider is registered as a classic.

All of our licensed vehicles get charged a property tax, which is supposed to be based on the book value, then I buy tags and have them inspected every year. One thing that was odd, though, it my 72 Fiat Spider's property tax is $6 a year, but since my 71 falls under "antique" it's twice as much at $12. I also have to pay property tax on my dog and cat!

Hi Pope,
In Connecticut we pay a personal property tax for motor vehicles and homes to the town or city where we live. Each community has its own mill rate. The appraised value for homes comes from a professional independent appraisal company. For autos I believe it comes from one of the auto value books like "Blue Book". Our accessed value for both home and auto is 70% of appraised value. So for the Fiat's $8357.14 appraised value the assessed value is $5850. The mill rate is 30.06 so the bill is $177.62
What makes it curious is our 2007 Focus wagon is appraised at $13,028.71 and our 2006 Montego is $14,700.00. These seem slightly high but reasonable to me.

I hope to call the accesor tomorrow and discuss the Fiat.

Certainly makes you think about buying a new car less often.

I am pretty sure they use the Kelly Blue book or similar published values to establish the taxable value.

Really makes one regret the rising values in the Blue books we have been noticing of late. At least in those places that tax you on value...

I guess Ohio isn't so bad after all. My car is an '82, but since it is more than 25 years old, I pay no license, no registration, and no property tax. I pay nothing. Even for my daily driver, annual registration is a flat fee of about $35 with no inspections or e-check required.

That does it!! I'm moving to Ohio!!
I'm about to change the registration of my spider from British to Spanish. 1st the car has to go to the Malaga test centre (about 100 klm) to pass its "Tourist Exam" safety test and document scrutiny, then it's back to Iznajar to do the transfer paper work - and there's a lot of it, and then back down to Malaga for the official safety test followed by another visit to Iznajar to pass everything over to the cops. A couple of weeks later I get the new registration. And this little excercise is going to cost somewhere in the region of 1200 euros. SO OHIO LOOKS VERY TEMPTING
