Water Pump - Where is it?

Post by thenoel »

Hi all; I am new to this forum and a new 1978 Fiat 124 Spider owner. It's got the 1800 cc.

The car keeps overheating; IAP told me to try bleeding the air from the cooling system.

In order to do so I need to identify the correct hose to cut. Where on this car is the water pump located
so that I can identify the correct hose to cut.

Any help to this question or any other ideas why my car might be overheating is appreciated.

thanks
Noel

OK, I'll bite.
You don't cut any hose to bleed the system, "If you cut us, do we not bleed?" is great Shakespeare, but not so good on a cooling system.
IAP has a tech section on their website, and included there is a good bleeding technique. Go here;
http://www.international-auto.com/fiat- ... in-cam.cfm
It will also show you where the water pump is located, it has a V-belt pulley on the front of it that's not shown in the diagram.

the only reason to cut a hose would be to install a flush tee, which can make filling/bleeding a painless process. If that's what your plan is, cut the heater hose where it goes over top of the right cam cover, just behind the distributor

rlux4:

Thanks for the reply, but those instructions are for a fiat with a different thermostat/housing than mine.
Mine has a inline thermostat ... my housing looks like a dual barrell gun.

SoCal, you are right on the mark as to what I have to do. I was told by IAP people that those instructions on their website would not work for my car.

I was also told that the easiest way to do the air lock bleed on my fiat would be to cut the hose and but in a tee that comes with the Prestone flush kit.

I did cut a hose and at the place where you described; I put the tee, provided with the kit, in that place .

I got afraid when I saw that it was bone dry; I was afraid I cut some incorrect hose. In addidtion I left the top cover of the tee open with the car on and saw no fluid going through it.

This is why I was asking where the water pump is because I wanted to verify that the hose I cut is correct. I assumed that the hose I need to cut to place the tee is somewhere running to the water pump. Is this a correct assumption?

Again thanks rlux4 and SoCal.

Sorry if I am asking ignorant questions ... I am no where near to being a mechanic; but I throughly enjoy learning and look forward to working on my car.

do your final cooling system fill through the flush tee, with the heater controls on hot.

DO NOT put any water in that tee until you read this thread completely.

There is a hose that is part of the EGR system. It can be confused with a water hose. Be careful.

That thread is exactly what I am afraid of.
Thanks for the tip and link to it.

How can I verify that I put the tee on the right
Hose?
Should the proper hose lead to the water pump ?
What are some things I can check ?

I don't have a pic of the line running from the water pump but if you look on the passenger side of your engine, you can see a metal tube running from the water pump to a rubber hose that goes into the firewall. At the same place on the firewall, you'll see another hose coming out that loops onto the top of your engine. These are the heater hoses and you want to put the "T" in the hose that loops onto the top of the engine:

See the hose behind the distributor cap going to the head. My 72 doesn't have as much crap on it, but you should get the idea:

mdrburchette:

Thanks so much for the great pics and explanation.

So according to what you are saying I currently have the tee in the wrong location.

Image

In my pic the tee is at "A" (red) but according to you it should be on "B" (yellow).

So I currently have it in the wrong location?
So I need to move the tee to "B"?

Please verify my understanding now.

regards and thanks,
Noel

I would agree with you that the tee should be at the yellow location. But I don't recognize that other hose that you have the tee in now. The good thing is that you didn't hit the EGR hose, so your safe there.

I don't know what that hose is for, (red) neither of my cars, ('72 or '82) have it, but it's not the correct one. The one you need goes to the head in between the cam covers, (the yellow one).

The (wrong) hose goes to the activated carbon canister (which collects fuel vapor from the gas tank) and connects to the intake manifold on the other (Mike's Right) side. If you look in your Haynes manual the system is depicted on pg64.

Thanks for everyone's help and replies.

I did get the tee put onto the correct hose; unfortunately after filling coolant from that tee
the car still was overheating.

I went ahead and ordered a thermostat from IAP; got here yesterday.

I opened up the thermostat housing and lo and behold there was no existing thermostat there.
So I put the new one in.

It's running a lot cooler now, however on idle the temperature still continues to rise.

I give it some gas and then the temp starts to drop down again.

I am thinking the water pump may be weak.

Do you guys think this may the next problem to look at?

Thanks again to all.
