What are these two ports on the air intake for? I know which tube to connect back onto the big 'A' (but not what the other end of the tube connects to). Nothing was connected to 'B'. The car ran just fine before I removed this.

There should be a hose going to the carb or intake, carb I think. I believe it helps with the crankcase ventilation. I'd repalce those fuel hoses asap, mine were so brittle you could break them in half by bending them.

A connects to the large crankcase breather hose, B connects to a nipple on the front of the carb, below the accelerator pump arm. You need both of them

Found the answer in my repair manual now, thanks to the guidance. The small one connects via hose to the crankcase blow-by. I looked on our engine, and some previous owner had cut that hose near the carb and sealed it off. Must be related to them removing some emissions parts? I know that someone did that to the car before us.
In the big hose (sump to air cleaner line), there's supposed to be a flame trap per the manual. Again, it doesn't exist on our car. What risk of damage is there when running the engine without it?

the flame trap is to ensure that a backfire in the carb doesn't ignite the crankcase vapors. You won't notice that it's missing unless your carb backfires. In all of my life, I've only seen one car explode the crankcase, and that was due to fuel dilution of the oil when a backfire occurred. And that wasn't a Fiat
