Istalling a "Smog Pump"

Post by barnesjtsl »

No luck calling an "Air Pump" so hopefully some may know it as a "Smog Pump"?

I have a 79 Spider 2000 project car. The guy I got it from took off the smog pump, but I need to put it back on to pass a smog test.

All I have is the pump, but I don't think I will have too much of a problem finding everything else I need to install it, I'm just not sure what all I need.

Can anyone give me detailed instructions (pictures or sketches would be great as well) on how to install on of these? The manual I have doesn't talk about these things at all, with the exception of including them in a few graphics.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

John B

Here's a picture of everything you'd need, if the installation is the same as my 1978 carb'd 1800 engine. I have not shown the belt or mounting bracket, of course. I don't know where you'd find this stuff, although Mark seems to collect it for CA cars.

the 79 systems were slightly different than 78s, and there were two different systems in 79. One used the pump setup similar to 78 but without the air injection rail. The check valve screwed directly into the cylinder head. The other system was a pulse air system that used two check valves in the head, with a reed valve attachment on the air cleaner. Look at the top of the head, and determine how many threaded holes are there for check valves.

Thanks for all the help. Hopefully the image will come through.

Can anyone tell me which type of smog pump system I have and maybe a little lowdown on everything I will need to get it installed. It looks to be somewhat different than the 78 model image above.

Thank you,

John B

the plug you're pointing to is in the water jacket; the 2nd water temp sensor goes there. The check valve goes where the brass plug is right next to it

Thanks to all the replies (especially So Cal Mark).

I came accross the following diagram that helped me with what I need. This for the 1979 Spiders with carburetors.

Thanks again everyone,
