Issue with Idle / High RPMs

Post by KillerB »

Ok, Jet Engines I know... Car engines a little.... Carburetors less...

Here's my problem, hopefully it's a simple fix. (Ha! Never!)

My Car starts and runs well, but has a tendency to stay in the 3000 RPM range, when I come to a stop at a light, or park etc... it will only drop down into a respectable range when I gun the throttle. 70% of the time it will drop happily into low idle.

1979 with 2000cc and 34 ADF.

Any Ideas?

is the choke opening fully? Is the throttle cable adjust with some slack?

It sounds like either the choke, or a binding throttle. You can deduct it at the carb while running, also the gas pedal and cable are suspect. Ive seen times when a stronger return spring was required too.

The throttle works smoothly, there's no slack in the cable, and the spring is strong. I'm leaning towards the choke... I know that there are all kinds of bits, cams, springs etc.. that can be worn or binding. Can I take it apart without disconnecting ths coolant lines?
