engine identification

Post by narfire »

Hi people,I'm looking at a spare engine that is claimed to be a 1608.
# 124AC000 S62/4268803. Owner said it came from South Africa.
Looking at the reference section in IAP's catalog 124 AC says 1438 engine. The 72's I have bought have 125BC as ID showing 1608 engine.
The picture of the engine shows the dist. down above the oil filter not on the cam towers. I had a 1438 in the 70 spider I had 30 years ago and it was set up like this one.
Owner still insists this is a 1608.
I don't know how to link but it can be seen on Kijiji Calgary, head and block sold separately.
Thanks for any insight on this

Thanks Adrians, that helped and found an answer. The head is 1438 and the block had 125A on it. The above link shows this as a 1608. From what type of fiat, not sure.
Thanks

Chris, here is the Kijiji link to both the head and the engine:

http://calgary.kijiji.ca/f-fiat-Classif ... hFormZtrue

But if you go and look at that link again that adrians gave you, you'll see that the engine was from a Fiat 125. Perhaps you didn't notice the heading in black directly the item. I wouldn't think that engine would work well for you - wrong block and wrong head. Sorry I didn't notice that before. I suppose it could be used, but would require some workarounds.

By the way, to create a link in a post, click on the "URL" button when you create your post. That will create two url codes within your post. Next, you need to put the URL (address of the page you want to link to) between those two codes. So go back to the page you want to link to, and "highlight" the address line for the page. Right click on the highlighted line and select "copy" and then go back to your posting and put your cursor between the two url markers, right click and select paste. Essentially, you are copying and pasting the URL from the page you want to link it, and then you put it between two codes on your post that tell the reader's computer to render it as a link. Sorry for the tutorial - probably you know some of this already.

Chris
I just checked that head part number from Brad Artigue - Service Manual ( Section 6.1) and it says that the 4268803 head is from a 1608 engine Spider

The head will show a 124ac number and the block will show 125bc.040 if it's a 1608 engine. The heads on 1438 and 1608 are interchangeable.

Thanks folks. Denise, the block evidently has 125A on the side, looking at the reference stuff I thought 125BCis the 1608,the two cars I have bought have the 125BC engine designation. I think I'll see what the engines are like before getting ahead of myself anyway. Kinda like the cam mounted dist. anyway.I do have a 124ac head but it looks like it swalloed a carb nut and is a bit dinted, would have to take a bit off to clean it up.
Can one put the valves from a 2L into these heads?
