Illegal to pump gas in South East Oregon
Illegal to pump gas in South East Oregon
3 years ago when I was living in Reno, NV. We drove to Idaho. On the way back we took a detour through Oregon. We needed some gas in Oregon. So we pulled into a gas station, I got out, grabed the pump, stuck it in my tank and some dude come running out of the building like he just robbed the joint and came towards us and said "what are you doing". I said "just getting gas". He said "you cant do that, its illegal" So he proceded to fill up my tank, I went in and paid. I couldn't believe its illegal anywhere anymore to get your own gas. I remember you had a choice back in the old days called self serv or full service. So does anyone know of anywhere where its still illegal to pump your own gas?

The same thing happened to me in New Jersey. From what I gather, it's to keep people in jobs.

when the idea of self-serve was first being discussed, there were serious concerns about safety. I remember the video of a little old lady waving the gas nozzle around, spraying gasoline everywhere. I guess a few states still worry about it. Gas pump attendants are really career jobs we should worry about saving

Re: Illegal to pump gas in South East Oregon
It is still illegal to pump your own gas here in Oregon. Though I wish it wasn't that way. Waiting for the attendant is frustrating when the station is very busy.
Speaking of filling up, does anyone know if there are issues with the older spiders with the leaded fuel filler tubes? Mine doesn't have the narrow opening and flapper valve.

The old leaded fuel pumps had nozzles that were too large to fit into an unleaded tank's hole and flap. But the old Spiders that used leaded fuel (like yours and mine) can accept any size nozzle.

shouldn't be any issues, not sure where you could buy leaded fuel anyway

Re: Illegal to pump gas in South East Oregon
It's always interesting to read about happenings on the other side of this ever shrinking rock.
We share so much, but are separated by a common language . What you call 'Gas' (Gasoline) we refer to as 'Petrol' (Petroleum) and we also run a large proportion of our vehicles on Gas ( Liquefied Petroleum Gas). Therefore we don't have Gas Stations, we have Service Stations which dispense Petrol, Diesel and Gas. They were called Sevice Stations because you used to get 'service' when you pulled in. I fondly remember working my way through the final years of High School and then University working nights and weekends at a couple of Service Stations in our area. We'd fill the customer's tank (remember the nozzles that had a clip that allowed it to fill hands-free then shut off when full), check the water and oil, even do the tyre pressures if the customer asked and then take the cash and give change (no credit cards back then). When not out on the forecourt we'd be doing oil changes or simple service jobs in the workshop. But service was the name of the game.
Self-service killed all that, and many cars were worse off for it, but thankfully today's vehicles seem to run forever without any non-scheduled maintenance.
I can see how the ever-invasive Nanny-State could legislate Self-service out of existance, it's seems like it's just a matter of time before some lilly-livered, do-gooder makes sure anybody handling flammable liquids has a post-graduate degree in Industrial Chemistry and Pyrotechnology . Either that or the economic situation will be such that like in some Asian Countries, unemployed people will take on the refuelling role at service stations and expect a tip from the driver in return.

Re: Illegal to pump gas in South East Oregon
Your totally right on the lingo Curley. About whats really Gas, petro. I love watching 5th Gear on Cable, and they did a little bit about why we call certain things on a car the wrong thing. It was kinda funny, like the bonnet/hood and where its located and why it has that name. Tires and Wheels, people don't know the difference. I could go on for days with these terms. like why is a Building called a Building when your building the building it should be called a building but when your done why isn't it called a Built, its all ready done, your not building it anymore. Someone just forgot to give it a name after it was Built and therefore the name Building stuck. Its a great sounding, smooth flowing word, but its definately not even close to the right word we should be using.

I think this post already took a turn, not sure where it's going! So...
Why do we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway?
Why do we pay tolls on a freeway?
Why is it called Cargo when you ship (in/on a ship) items and a Shipment when you drive them?
Why do round pizza's come in square boxes?
Why does a nose run, but feet smell?
Why are apartments so close together?

Re: Illegal to pump gas in South East Oregon
Funny thing, when I lived in Oregon and had fuel put in my '69 Nova by the "specially trained professionals", I always had to get out and check my gas cap. The filler was in the rear behind the license plate and they wouldn't get both tangs latched, so when I took off gas splashed out. Sometimes they walked around the car looking for the gas cap.

It used to be fun driving up to bowsers in my twin-tanked Cooper S and saying, "Fill 'em both up" or "Left side only", then watching the pump jockey try to figure it out .htchevyii wrote:Funny thing, when I lived in Oregon and had fuel put in my '69 Nova by the "specially trained professionals", I always had to get out and check my gas cap. Still got the car, but nowadays it's strictly high octane racing fuel.

Re: Illegal to pump gas in South East Oregon
Several years ago I stopped at a large station along I-5 in Oregon. The attendant kept topping off the tank until there was fuel running down the side of the car. I looked around and found the same situation at several other pumps. There were puddles of gas at every pump. It seemed to me he was trying to generate sales at the expense of the environment and the side of my car. I went in and complained to the manager who was uncaring at best. I washed it off with the windshield washer brush and rinsed it with the hose. Now, every time I go to Oregon, I stand next to them and make sure they don't top it off.

The Law that you cannot pump gas into your own vehicle was voted in by the residence of Oregon way back when and it was to create more jobs .. I would rather pump my own ,,but as for my classic truck I have never been turned down when I ask to pump my own so not to spill gas on my paint ..My Corvette I owned had the gas filler tube in the center behind the rear window and chipping paint also was a concern ..MNspiderman wrote:3 years ago when I was living in Reno, NV. I just got back from souther California yesterday and while getting gas in southern Oregon I ask to get my tank topped off and was told that it is against the Law to have this done anymore.. LD
