BAM! What was that?

Post by rlux4 »

Something happened this morning that's never happened with my car before. It's been sitting the week while I'm in Ventura, and when I hit the key to start it: POW! It backfired out the exhaust. The timing's on, and it's running like a new car. The only thing I can think of that might have happened is it had some unburnt fuel in the engine. I'm guessing that could only be caused by a leaking injector. Am I in the ballpark with this?
I don't have time to send them out to be refurbished before Oregon 09, so I hope it's a one shot deal. (Fingers crossed)

I'm just trying to figure out how I can jinx your car again from way over here!

We used to stuff potatoes in the tailpipes of the school buses when we were kids, to make them sound like a canon! (Don't stand behind the bus when it cranks up!) Maybe some little kid has done the same with your exhaust.

Ron, my 81 FI did the same thing to me about a month ago. But nothing like that before or since. My bet is that it is a freak thing, and nothing to worry about. That's a bet though, not a diagnosis

That's what I'm hoping Launie. At least now i know it's not an unheard of occurrence. Nope Ace, I don't see how I can blame it on you. Seems you have to be at least in the general vicinity before your aura affects my car.

What happened is when you hit your key. Your distributor was in such perfect alignment cap, rotor, pickup that when you turned the key, the coil instantly charged as it is suppose to, it completed a circuit all the way to the spark plug and it fired. From your car sitting it accumilated gasses in the chamber and they went BaBoom. No biggie. just happened to be on the exhaust stroke.

Now that is a very nice explanation! I'm inclined to believe it. Makes sense. Thank you :D
