New sputter problem

Post by DougC »

I took the Spider ('77) out for a long drive yesterday. After sitting for a couple of hours, on the way home she immediately began sputtering and backfiring badly on acceleration. Once up to temp and at highway speed it evened out some, but I could see on the tach that it was still skipping. Any ideas?

Hallelujah! She has come back to life! For archival purposes I will document the story here: :D

So, I replaced both condersers, no difference. Then today I read about changing from dual points to single, documented here: http://www.international-auto.com/fiat- ... ersion.cfm, so I thought that while I was already messing with the distributor, why not do this. Especially since it's basically "pull out one set of points, it doesn't matter which, and throw them away". My kind of performance mod.

So, I yanked out one set, put the dist. cap back on and - nothing. The engine would not start at all. Checked for power with a multimeter and everything seemed to be fine. So, I tried the old "turn the key real fast to try to line up the distributor cam so the point are gapped" method and finally got it properly aligned. Guess what? The set of points I left in there were not gapped at all!

So, I set the gap, and bam! She purrs like a kitten now. Runs better than she ever has in the entire 3 weeks :) that I've owned her. Hooray! Special thanks to So Cal Mark for steering me in the right direction.
