Hard to turn engine on when hot

Post by cooter131 »

Hello everybody.

My question is included in the topoic's subject. Not much left to add.

My 1608 engine will start normally when cold, but it takes 10-15 seconds of cranking until it fires up when it is hot. (after a normal 20 minutes ride for example)

It does this even if I instantly turn it off and try to turn it back on.

Water temerature is always within normal, starter motor spindles normally, alternator charges the battery OK.
Twin 40 IDFs are installed and no other mods have been made.

Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks a lot.
George.

does this condition improve with colder weather, and get worse with hot weather? or does change in ambient temperature seem to have little affect?

check for vacuum leaks and loose carburetor mounts.

It is hard to say. You see in Greece it is expected to be very hot until the end of September!!!

However, I think it has happened a couple of times during winter, so I suppose that it is mostly affected by the engine's temperature rather than ambient temperature.

Furthermore, when starting the engine cold (in the morning) the ambient temperature is arround 30 degrees C already, but the engine starts easily.

Carbs are 30 years old and I dont think they are realy reliable but if it is a carb related problem shouldn't it also happen when the car is still running, idling or revving?

After all, it's a FIAT. It SHOULD be electrical problem...
