Hi,
The '76 /1800 I bought came with a DHSA carb. It ran decent once warmed up but bad when cold. The aftermarket manual choke was broken and the screw hole on the carb stripped. Since I read this isn't the most desirable carb and I was doing other work (timing belt, water pump, etc) I swapped it with a 32ADFA2 I have from a parts car. I don't think this carb has ran for about 10 years but it seems like it's in decent shape.
So I bolted it on with a bunch of guess work and it runs like crap. Main problem is puffs (backfire?) coming out of the carb every few seconds. Yes, I know I jumped the gun a bit with just throwing it on there. Anyway, now I'm trying to figure out what connects to where by looking at the parts car.
I think I have most of it right but I don't know where the 2 tiny vaccuum lines at the bottom of the carb connect to? It looks like maybe the vapor canister but that's removed on my car. The other goes to a part next to the ignition coil (going from memory) but I don't see that on my car either. Can I just block them off? I'm not even sure if my parts car is a good reference point.
Also, I did not connect the idle solenoid which is apparently a good reason why it won't idle Can I just make my own hot circuit for that or is it switched with something else?
I know, maybe I'm nuts for trying to run this carb after it sat for so long, but I figured it's worth a shot... or is it not? Either way, I still need to know how to connect it properly!

The 32 ADFA was the original carb on your 76 so everything should be there to hook it up right. If you realy want it to run like an Italian sports car, you should consider rebuilding the carb. Bayless used to have the best deal on the rebuild kit, but they just got bought out and will not be shipping stuff for a while. So its Vicks or IAP for the rebuild kit.

I rebuilt my 32 adf carb recently, I plugged every vacuum hose and it ran beautiful. as long as i had the idle selinoid plugged into 12v's. The only think I had to do was was plug internally the (the name escapes me) the the looks like an excellerator pump but its between the valve cover and the carb but mounted on the carb in the front. (brain fart) its for vacuum and mine was deteriorated and the carb kit didn't come with that gasket which looks identical to the accelerator pump but with a spring pushing it. its 1" square has 4 holes in corners and a metal disk in the center with a post which protrudes out of the carb just like the accelerator pump on the other side of the carb. (I simply cant remember what its called, Dam it) Anyway, the fabric rotts and creates a vacuum leak unseen by your eyes. so dont forget to check it or plug it internally.

I know, I really would like to rebuild the carb but I have never done one before. I do all other work myself but never rebuilt an engine, a carb, or tranny. I guess come to think of it, I do all replacement stuff - brakes, timing belts, water pumps, etc.
Do you think a novice can rebuild this carb? If so, about how long would it take? I realize everyone's different, but are we talking 15 hours or 2 hours for a first timer? Any special tools?

carburetors aren't rocket science. they can be rebuilt by us commoners

I can't begin to tell you how many carburetors I repair that have been "rebuilt" by owners. They aren't rocket science, but if you don't understand the theory of how it works, how can you "rebuild" it? The first step is determining the problem it has that you are trying to solve

Mark, that sure doesn't instill confidence I think I can handle it, but I'm just worried the car will be out of commission for a few more weeks. I don't really know how long it will take me.
But, I can tell you what I'm trying to resolve - the car running crappy! I know its the carb because the old one worked fine except the choke. But that's a deal breaker if I'm going to let the wife drive the car (one of the reasons I was able to get it in the first place). And since its a DHSA and not known to be the best, I decided to focus my energy on this ADF.
I did hook up the idle solenoid and it makes a huge difference. I also blew it out with compressed air. Now it actually ran pretty good when cold but as it warmed up, started to backfire. Especially when I hit the gas real quick. I tried adjusting the choke both directions but it just makes it worse. Any suggestions? I'm guessing maybe the accelerator pump is shot or at least not adjusted properly.
I'd prefer to make the rebuild a winter project if I can get this working decently in the mean time.

I'm not trying to discourage you from tackling the job, but if you're not schooled in carb theory and practical function I'd suggest you get a Weber book and read it. Since you're planning a winter project that gives you plenty of time to research it. It does sound like an accelerator pump issue, but the pump discharge nozzle could be a part of the problem too. The jetting could be way off also.
