Plugging Reed Valve holes in 79 head

Post by Schnauzer »

What size plugs are used to plug the holes in the 79 carbed 2000cc head. Size and thread. I know some of you Rascals have done this already. Napa or AutoZone part number?

Thanks for the help. I want to have these when I remove the reed valves. I live a long way from stores so running back and forth picking through their stock doesn't work very well.

it only takes one trip.. take the reed valve with you. Sorry, i cannot remember the size. seems like 19mm.

but why would you need to make more than one trip? you may have to surf a couple of stores, since the counter guys would be of little help over the phone. just ask to see their selection of metric oil pan drain plugs.

Hey Mike:

Just trying to save some time and miles. I am 30 miles out from an auto parts store and not very well stocked ones in the first place. Probably end up ordering what I need. Then it is another 60 round trip to pick them up. Where I am a foreign car is anything not a Ford, Chev, or Dodge 4wd Diesel truck. You probably enjoy much better stocked stores there. I also don't want my boys Spider down. I am sure someone out there has this information and will post it. Help me out guys.

Doesn't vick's sell a kit for that? I spent alot of time going to 4 auto zones and advanced autos near me to find 4 of the same drain plugs. Of course the last autozone I went to had 4 in stock the rest only had one each.

I called Vicks. No go. They have the four plugs for the EGR system. I have the Napa number for those already. Bob at Vicks said he thought that the plugs between #1 & 2 and #3 & 4 were SAE NTP. He said he thinks Fiat got the components from Ford hence the non metric sizes. Bottom line is I am still in the dark. I know this mod has been done many times so someone out there knows the secret.

The Napa part numbers you are looking for are for the Balkamp oil drain plug:

16MM/1.5 pitch NAPA/Balkamp part # 704-1067
18MM/1.5 pitch NAPA/Balkamp part # 704-1037

When I bought these (16MM/1.5 pitch) for my 79 Spider 4 years ago, some came with and some without extended tips on the end of the threaded section. There is no need for the extended tip items as they are a bit too long but can simply be shortened if that's all that's available. My local NAPA guy had no answer as to why some came with the extended tip however.

Im pretty sure that the valves were GM. I carried my valve to a hardware, and replaced with the oil pan drain bolt.
