Engine sputter

Post by jferrara »

Hi everyone, took my 78 out the other day and encountered a new problem. Was a little sluggish getting into first gear when first started (thought the engine was just cold). Was on the road for about an hour, avg speed about 45mph and didn't experience anything unusual. As my trip came to an end I was in bumper to bumper traffic and the car stalled out on me. It was a struggle to get the car re-started (battery light was on, then blinking at me). Once the car started again I stepped on the gas to almost no reaction as if the car was not getting gas, then a little sputter began to happen, then finally the engine took off and the rpm's rose. Once moving again in first the car seemed fine, no sputtering, and anything above 1500 rpm's I was fine. Back to a stop, car idled hard, sputtering again, stalled and same "not getting gas" issue again. Was eventually keeping the car rev'd to 1500 rpms at stops just to keep from stalling.

Fuel filter seems clean and fine, is this a fuel pump issue? Alternator?

was the battery light on when the engine was running, or only when it stalled? I'd check the point gap in the distributor and also make sure the idle cutoff solenoid is working
