I went and brought another Fiat - a 128 Sedan ? - (That's 5 cars and only 3 drivers in the household)
It's 38 years old, has had 2 owners and the previous owner's family called it FRED. - FRED the FIAT
It's engine is a 1.1l - 4 speed - first impressions are good it's cleaning up well.
My son ( and possibly my daughter ) and I are going to run it as a MotorKhanna car and possibly in Supersprints.

Hi Adrians ,, that really looks like a car with a little care can be as good as new .. do you have a lot of these fiats like this in Australia ?
Say,, would you please tell me some about the MotorKhanna car and possibly Supersprints that you mentioned.. It would be interesting to know just what exactly these two are ..
I want to tell you that I got me a Western Australia license plate last week from a fella who lives there ..do you live in the western part also ? the plate is identified with a WA above the numbers and it is a yellow one ,,maybe you can tell me the year it is by its color if you would ..as I didn't get this from him .. LD

Thanks all for your comments, we’ll see how the 128 works out.

Supersprints - Are just timed track days, 5 laps at a time, no racing, overtaking on the straight only, unless waved through by another driver. Cars with similar times are grouped together, slowest cars at the back on the grid. So in theory the front car shouldn't catch the slowest car in 5 laps.

I live in Sydney which is the capital city for the State of New South Wales, and is on the east coast. Your friend possibly lives in Perth which is the capital city for Western Australia and is on the west coast. Australia is big, an flying coast to coast takes 5 hours, check out Google Earth.
Hope that helps !

Yes, 128 - Were sold originally in Australia so there was quite a few of them around, 128 sedan, 128 SL 1300 Coupe and the 128 3P Coupe. Not 100% sure about the wagon (estate) being sold here.do you have a lot of these fiats like this in Australia

Motorkhanna are course events usually run on grass/dirt or sometimes tarmac. It's a series of witches hats or poles with flags ( which can be knock off ) laid out in a defined course and intended direction of travel. Events are timed and penalties are given for hitting and knocking off the flags. (see photo)would you please tell me some about the MotorKhanna car and possibly Supersprints that you mentioned.. It would be interesting to know just what exactly these two are ..

Registration and vehicle licensing in different in Oz to the USA. The number plate is issued to the car and stays with the car until it's de-registered or the owner changes to another plate, there are no sticks on the plates to prove the car is under current registration. Instead the Road Authority issues a new window stick each year ( different color each year ) when the car registration is renewed. There are only 5 States and 2 Territory in Oz, so the plates only show the State the car in registered in. ( i.e. WA for Western Australia, QLD for Queensland and NSW for New South Wales). We can buy custom number plates that have ongoing fees attached.I want to tell you that I got me a Western Australia license plate last week from a fella who lives there ..do you live in the western part also ? the plate is identified with a WA above the numbers and it is a yellow one ,,maybe you can tell me the year it is by its color if you would ..as I didn't get this from him .. Re: I went and brought another Fiat
The colour of the plate is not much of an indicator of the year. In West Oz, number plates were originally (in the late 1950s and early 1960s) black with white lettering, starting with the letter U (UAB 123 or similar). Then the plates changed to white with black lettering. Once they ran out of U combinations they changed to an X prefix. Once they ran out of Xs (at XZZ 999) they started using a numerical prefix beginning with 6 (6AA 123). The 6-prefix plates were yellow with black text, and started in the late 1970s. From there, they continued through 7, 8 and 9 prefixes all with black on yellow, although the slogan on the plate changed from time to time (eg WA The Golden State, WA State of Excitement). As an aside, the car registrations only went up to letter S (eg 6SA 123) as 6TA (and then 7TA, 8TA etc) and onward were used for trailer registrations. Also, 'Q' registrations (eg 6QN 123) were used only by government cars (and buses).GOPAPA wrote: I want to tell you that I got me a Western Australia license plate last week from a fella who lives there ..do you live in the western part also ? the plate is identified with a WA above the numbers and it is a yellow one ,,maybe you can tell me the year it is by its color if you would ..as I didn't get this from him .. After they used up all the 9s, the plate configuration changed to a seven-digit combination starting with 1 (1ABC 123) which was white with blue lettering. This is the current style and is now up to around 1DAZ 999.
This only covers the metropolitan area though - country or shire plates have a one, two or three letter prefix (eg BY 123) with the letters corresponding to the region (BY is Bunbury, BSN is Busselton etc). These were black on yellow but are now blue on white. if the plate has a large dot in between the letters and numbers that signifies a 'shire' rather than a town.
In between there were 'personalised' plates of blue with black lettering ending in P, three alpha/three numeric combinations (eg GIW 124P). These also had 'WA - Home of the America's Cup' slogan for a while (when we had the Cup - between 1983 and 1987). After that they released two other 'custom plate' styles which could be any combination of letters and numbers (but not all numbers) - in a range of 14 colour combinations, and up to 7 characters (on aluminium) or 9 characters (on polycarbonate). Incidentally, a number series (white on black polycarbonate) and a car make series (with the make written in the manufacturer's script, black on white polycarbonate) were auctioned off in the 1980s.
As a fundraiser in the early 1990s (and still today), sporting clubs and local councils were offered their own series of plates. For example, Victoria Park has 123 VPK plates with the council logo, East Fremantle Yacht Club has EFYC 123 in the club's colours, etc.
And just recently there is now a 'Euro' style plate available which can be configured in a variety of ways, and if bought from a European marque dealer, can be sourced with the vehicle marque logo on the plate.
So, that might help you figure out what age your plate is. Bear in mind that each state has different alphanumeric combinations and colour schemes too.

Re: I went and brought another Fiat a 128 Sedan
Quick update on the 128 Sedan
Found some rust on the driver side floor and sill, got someone lined up to do a quick patch and weld.
The Koni Front shock where rebuilt and repainted, still need to source some rear shocks, starter motor was rebuilt by a friend and also got a replacment raditor fan, after the other one melted.

Re: I went and brought another Fiat a 128 Sedan
adrians,
Nice 128 you have. I just picked up two 128 SL Sport Coupes. One is rough, the other is rougher, but both can be saved. The one I call rough has a very straight body and still original paint. The problem is some rust through in all the usual places.
I towed one home so far with a Dodge Magnum. My older son followed in a Dodge Dakota truck because we had so many extra parts to bring home we filled the Magnum and the truck. There were even some boxes of parts in the Fiat.
I already have three Spiders, so now I have enough projects. I hope no more Fiats find me for a while.
Good luck with your project.
Ernie

Re: I went and brought another Fiat a 128 Sedan
Well - Those voices in the head were at it again earlier in the week.
I've ended up with another 128 Sedan, it's 1973 Sedan 1100cc but a UK model imported to Australia in the 80's.
The car is a rust bucket but is mechanical good - only 45000 on the clock.
Will pick it up in two or three weeks

Re: I went and brought another Fiat a 128 Sedan
Car has finally come back from the retired panelbeater and the semi-retired Fiat mechanic ! ! - "all work done at Mates rate "
All the large rust holes were cut, welded and filled, and left rough so the 17 year old son can finish them !
The 'mechanic' found one of the cam lobes worn so he repalced it with one from an 1300 SL ( extra 5HP ), also fitted a 4-2 header pipe from a 3P.
Will be using the car of the 5th of July for a motorkhana event.
