Ceased Engine
Ceased Engine
Im having my 1975 spiders head reworked at a machine shop new valves, but the real problem is the engine i think that the auxillary shaft has ceased the engine from being timed improperly. Can the lobe on it actually interfere to that point? Just to cover the bases ive sprayed a can of liquid wrench in the cylinders. I read somewhere that if the aux timing is off the oil pump's gears can be damaged so i dropped the oil pan took off the pump and inspected it. It had no signs of damage. Any help will be appreciated.
Re: Ceased Engine
normally the aux shaft only interferes with the crankshaft on a 2L motor
Re: Ceased Engine
I only think that the cause of the problem is the aux shaft because it is also ceased along with the engine
Re: Ceased Engine
Any suggestions about how to break the engine free without hurting it would be helpful

Re: Ceased Engine
Are you saying you have the head and pan off the block and the engine is still seized? Shouldn't you be able to turn the aux pulley with the timing belt off? Was there any metal in the pan when you pulled it?

Re: Ceased Engine
yes the engine is stripped down a bit and no the aux pulley wont budge and i dont want to force it. are there instructions for taking aux shaft out i havent seen it in the manual?
Re: Ceased Engine
Good new the engine is no longer seized after 6 days of soaking and with a 1 1/2 inch socket and a breaker bar. Still a little strange though before the 2nd and 3rd pistons go to tdc it gets tough to cycle any ideas on whats causing this? The aux pulley is still locked up. i took off the cap that covers the gears where older models had its distributor the teeth looked good not sure what do do about it. The aux pulley is about 160 degrees from where it should be

Re: Ceased Engine
If you hav'nt done so, get the oil pan off and have a look whats going on down below. Sounds like something might have let go/ grenaded down there. The aux shaft comes out by taking the three 10 mm screws out of the seal carrier and then there are a couple more screws to take out once the carrier is off. Pull the aux shaft out and see what has happened.

Re: Ceased Engine
do all 4 pistons go up and down as you turn the engine? It sounds like a rod has hit the aux shaft and bent it
Re: Ceased Engine
yes all pistons move like they should. i was planning on taking the aux shaft out but cant get the crank pulley off to get to it. If i do need a new aux shaft where could i get one no one ive seen carries them

Re: Ceased Engine
If you have air,an impact wrench zips that bolt off quick,if not, try wrapping the old timing belt around the gear and jam it tight somehow(twist like a tourniquet) and use a socket. Once it is off, everything else will come apart easy.
If the aux shaft is toast,I'd suggest going to the parts wanted section,I'd guess there would be someone out there with an engine that is nackered but with a good aux. shaft. There is a bearing, like a main bearing, in there that might/should be replaced, and that might be an issue to find. Try one of the vendors for that, replace the oil seal of course.
Good luck

Re: Ceased Engine
Ok so i got the aux shaft out and it was the problem but im not sure if it is bent my bet is that the lobe was interfering. this car was never stared before the problem just turned over a couple of times. the teeth are good is there any way to test it without putting it all back together
Re: Ceased Engine
All right so i checked the aux shaft and its straight. I got the head back from the machine shop on friday. I was going to give in on buying a shim tool but IAP is out of stock and i dont want to pay double at Vicks. Any thoughts on what else might do the job i tried a bent screw driver but thats pretty useless. The only thing i can think off is to take down the gaps and start unbolting. Thanks for the help so far
Re: Ceased Engine
with the head on the bench, it's much quicker to unbolt the cam housing after measuring clearances
Re: Ceased Engine
Thanks for the info i wasnt sure that would be an accurate option but its how i did it. I got all the gaps then took it apart did the math and now the new parts will be here tuesday. Luckily IAP is really close to roanoke and cheap shipping is one day shipping
