My car currently has some Bosch plugs in it (not sure what kind)
My old one, when it was running, had some NGK's in it.
So what is recommended..the book I have, and the 1982 owners manual says Champion RN9Y plugs, is that what you guys use?
The car has a rough idle at 850rpms, has to run at around 1000 to keep steady...also doesn't help that it has a half tank of gas of questionable age, we think its either fully or partially stale. But we think the main reason the car's running rough is because of the plugs (an old bronco my dad had hated bosch plugs, but we threw a set of autolites or motorlites or something in it and it ran flawlessly)
What plugs do you guys use?
Re: What plugs do you guys use?
plain ol Bosch Super work just fine, as do NGK. Platinum or irridium or other expensive plugs are a waste of money and won't fire after being fuel fouled. Isolate which cylinder is misfiring and get rid of the old gas for starts
Re: What plugs do you guys use?
I think I'm just going to take my old wires (they're basically brand new) as well as the plugs from my old fiat, as they're barely used NGK plugs. So Cal Mark wrote:plain ol Bosch Super work just fine, as do NGK. Then if that doesn't help I'll get back to you on the cylinder misfiring stuff, think the distributor could be out of time?

1 st. thing...loose that old fuel. drain the tank!!! take a look for rust flakes ect. change fuel filters. whether FI or carb the fuel passes through many small orifices and has to be free of crap. I honestly did not notice any difference with the expensive plugs and went back to the recomended ones, think I have NGK's now.
Its wonderfull to see a younger fellow into these cars, several on the forum are getting their youngsters dialed into "old school" car maint.
Good luck and don't stop asking questions..

Heh, I'll be honest I'm not the best at car maintenance, my Concorde went about 25k without an oil change, and I just now got around to rotating the tires on it...the fronts were getting a little barenarfire wrote:1 st. thing...loose that old fuel. drain the tank!!! take a look for rust flakes ect. change fuel filters. whether FI or carb the fuel passes through many small orifices and has to be free of crap. This car's way different though, probably one of the only cars I've ever felt attached to, I guess I fell in love with the looks at an early age...it always bothered me that my dad's (currently mine, in storage) sat by itself in the corner for so long.
I actually got called an idiot at one point by a guy I went to school with because I wanted to pay upwards to 4-5 grand for a 20+ year old car (I had my eye on a nice '82 up in NC at one point in time). He told me that his '99 Mustang was "better in every way probably" and at under 9k was a better deal. Funny thing is, he's probably right, but at least mine turns more heads on the highway, and gets better gas mileage
