I'm not sure how to go about doing this...should i disconnect the starter and ignition system, turn the switch over and let the fuel pump pump it out? Or should I Pull the line before the pump/filter and let it drain without the pump?
I want to get all this nasty junk out of this tank.
What's the most adviseable way to drain the gas tank?
Re: What's the most adviseable way to drain the gas tank?
you are gonna remove the sending unit anyway, so that isn't gonna clog too much more than it is already. if you are gonna attempt to reuse the current electric pump..consider throwing a filter ahead of it temporarily to catch the additional gunk.
then when the pump runs dry, you'll still have a little slosh on the inside. carefully remove the 2" diameter 90° elbow that feeds the tank from the fill pipe, and allow some of that slosh to drain.
then remove the four nuts holding the tank in place, and tip out the rest of the slosh.
of course, rule #1 is to perform all this in closed quarters, with no ventilation.
rule #2 is to smoke a large stoogie or a couple of cigarettes, and have an open flame nearby.
just kidding, yeash!

The guy I bought it from gave me a brand new fuel filter, he said he ran all the old gas through it to catch the nasty stuff, then took it off and put the old one back on or something, so I think the gas is clear, but its stale and old (possibly, I don't know)mbouse wrote:you are gonna remove the sending unit anyway, so that isn't gonna clog too much more than it is already. if you are gonna attempt to reuse the current electric pump..consider throwing a filter ahead of it temporarily to catch the additional gunk.

umm... gas filters are under $5... why would someone attempt to reuse one?
dump the gas if you are uncertain of its age. the shelf life is only about 60 days anyway.
if it turns out to be clear (no impurities)... you might wanna dribble some into the tank of your OTHER fiat, say a gallon per tankful in order to safely dispose of it. or, if you are a pyromaniac, simply pour it on the ground...stand back and throw a lighted match on the puddle.

Ya, thats it! Spell out FIAT in the front lawn with the old gas and light it. Your local fire department likes to see flaming signs. LOL.
Fire good!!
My mom used to say, " boys who play with fire wet the bed" I never did. Wet the bed that is.

i remember that old saying. my kids just groan when i whip one of those old sayings out of the memory box....
they insist i must be older than dirt. but, like most things, they are wrong (i think)

Yeah, I don't get it either...but I unplugged the fuel line in the engine bay and used the airflow sensor to turn the pump on, pumping it through another hose to a gas container... urine yellow gas, as far as trash there wasn't much in there, I guess the filter is doing its job, I may just buy another one though to make sure I'm running a new one.mbouse wrote:umm... gas filters are under $5... why would someone attempt to reuse one?

I also put some premium gas (93 octane) in to run it, the idle issues persist, but I think we'll uncover the source of that soon enough.
May be a vacuum line in the engine, or my mechanic brother seems to think that there's a loose lifter clicking on the top that could be causing it. 62 thousand miles and not a single tuneup most likely, so I might need to put a shim in one of the valves.
