new spider ... advice before I ruin it :-)

Post by ScotcH »

I bought a 1978 spider for my wife so she would stop driving my M3. She loves it, so now I have to maintain it and fix it up :) Before I start, I figure I need to do some learning, especially since these carb things are a bit of a novelty for me! Also, this thing has been worked over by the previous owners, and is far enough from stock that the factory manuals are somewhat useless for tuning!

Anyway, here are some details and pictures:

- 1978 fiat spider, Canadian model (as fas as I know) non catalyst
- dual Weber DCNF carbs (I believe ... see photo)
- custom throttle linkage, feels like crap ... hard to press, and makes the car jump (is this a characteristic of the dual carbs?)
- some sort of header going into 2 into 1 going to dual pipes, Y into single pipe, resonator (I think), into an aftermarket dual tip muffler (ANSA?) (see picture)
- all emmisions stuff gone, various hoses seem unplogged, and don't go anywhere
- brake vac booster has a leak. When pressing the brake, you hear it pulsing, and idle drops. Will eventually slow and stall. This can be fixed by playing with the mixture screws on the carbs, but then the car runs worse at WOT.

Anyway, here are some questions for the experts:

- which way do I turn the dist for advance? I believe it's counter-clockwise? So far just played with it a bit by ear.
- The dual DCNFs have 4 mixture screws on them (2 per carb). These also have 4 smaller screws just above the mixture screws (again, 2 per carb). What are these screws?
- What's the linkage on the side of each carb (toward the driver fender)? It's unhooked and changes idle when moved ... is this the manual choke?
- car pops on decel, and kinda bogs on accel. Feels pretty slow, but I have no reference. Sounds great though!
- I assume that the leaking vac booster is causing some of the issues, so I will fix this before I tackle anything else

Thanks all in advance, and I'm sure I'll have many more questions in the near future!

Arek - Welcome here - I see you took the plunge. I can help you with some of this stuff, if you like and there are others in town with a wealth of knowledge. Give me a call at 613-692-2940.

Thanks Peter ... I was planning on calling you soon anyway, but figured I'd introduce myself on here as well, and what better way to do that than with a load of questions :)

The vac booster rebuild kit came in the mail today from Performance Fiat, with russian writting all over the package :). I'll tackle that after Sept 5/6 (last race weekend of the season!), then more ambitious work can be done once I know the vac leak is fixed.

In the mean time it could certainly use a basic tune to at least get it in the ballpark and see what needs addressing! Do you have timing tools (gun, etc .. do you even need it?) How about carb tools to equal out the carbs (or do you go by ear/feel?)

later,
Arek.

Arek - I can do better than that - I have Russian-speaking friends! I also have tools for setting up traditional ignition systems, like dwell meter, timing light, etc. Give me a call whenever you're ready and I'll help if I can. Good luck with the race weekend.

Lol ... the spider is definitely a fun drive! Very different from the M3 (obviously), but it has a lot of charm and cool factor about it. The sound is simply awesome at WOT! I'm looking forward to getting it into ship-shape condition for next summer.
