Craig,
I have the same block you have,132A1.040.6 sn 0595367 (serial number of the block, not the car. I think Brad Artigue's table that lists serial numbers are serial numbers of the vehicle, and not the engine block). I'm using a 55 Amp Magneti Marelli alternator with internal regulator, which is really the way to go, if you can find one. Here are a couple of shots taken while building up the engine during X-mas holidays 2005. One shot is with the alternator, and the other shows the mounting bracket that is built into the engine casting.

That is the same set up,Alvon. What year would I try and find that alternator for,or are they not neccesarily model year specific?Any idea what year model the block is?I know all my casting #'s(head, exhaust, etc) are for a 77,so I am assuming this is the block that came in my car.Car was mfg 11/76,and I have been told that the pass. side alternator was correct at least part way through the 77 model year.Kind of confusing!

Craig,
I don't know the answer to your questions. My spider is a '70, and the 1.8L engines were not available in '70, of course. I have the same challenges when I need to order parts for my car (I have to keep in mind that engine parts need to be for a '75 - '78 1.8L engine, and everything else (including tranny, rear end, brakes, suspension, etc.) is for a '70 1438 cc spider. I upgraded to the 55 amp internal regulator alternator several years ago after frustrations of constantly trying to adjust the external regulator to a high enough voltage to charge the battery and keep the lights bright, but not too high to boil fluid out of the battery and damage the hood. The internal regulator alternators are a great upgrade, as is electronic igntion (to eliminate having to adjust and replace points). If you keep your eyes open on ebay, or parts for sale in the Forums, you'll find one. If you post in parts wanted, someone may offer you one for sale. There are other brands of alternators that will work. You may find info by researching the archives or calling the Fiat Parts Vendors, who may have some in stock. Also, there may be shops out there that can rebuild your alternator, but I don't know if that's feasible.

Thank you,Alvon.I ordered the proper alt. for a 77...and it wont come close to fitting. The guys at Oreilly's here are the best.We found a part # off the alt. I have and they are cross referencing their dealers to see if it can be identified. It is an old number ,so the computer doesnt give the application. There is a guy in the next town that rebuilds ,so if that doesnt pan I will see if it is salvageable. Thanks for the info.

What is it about the new alternator that doesn't fit right? Front to back spacing? Up and down spacing to meet the upper slotted bracket? Width of gap between the lower mounting holes?

I had to put spacers in the the gap between the lower mounting holes on the alternator to get the front - to - back spacing correct. The curved upper bracket didn't come down to the right curvature to match the swing of the armature as it pivots on the lower bolt -- then I found out that there was another bracket that fit just right. It may or may not be the alternator that is the problem -- it could be some of the other pieces used for mounting it.
