Calling Dr. Weber

Post by ga.spyder »

Ok,the alternator issue is cleared up in my 77,thanks to much help especially Mike B.,Matt, Ace and Csaba. On to the dreaded C-word.Thats right carb issues. The car fires right up,idles smooth. When you try to give it gas,it makes a sucking sound along with a dead spot or hesitation before catching. If you floor the gas ,no issue and it takes off!I took a short drive today and the sucking sound grew louder and the car started to backfire.I thought it would die before I could get it home.Once home...nice smooth idle.Any suggestions...rebuild,cleaning,new carb, light it on fire??
Thanks,Craig
ps... ADFA,electric fuel pump,electronic ignition,dist. is tight,fuel pump running

Craig, I was a little hesitant to get into mine. But, its not really all that bad! Im glad I replaced the acc pump diaphram as the old one was very stiff, and worked, but not as well as the new. Just spray choke cleaner thru the passageways, blow them out, replace the gaskets, and its all chump! Any old Goober can do it!

agreed. old school is nothing to be shunned. it won't take rocket science to completely rebuild that carburetor. and, worst case, a BRAND SPANKING NEW ONE is only a couple hundred buck-0s.

buy the rebuild kit and giver a go. what have you got to lose? the car is not your daily driver/must have transporation.

rebuild it.

With you guys encouragement,I went after the carb somewhat.Since it didnt do it when I got it I felt that it must have p/u trash or broke loose some varnish,etc..I took out the jets and sprayed it down ,then blew everything out .And..voila ..it worked. The carb will probably need a rebuild ,but for now its running pretty well I do have a issue with having to kick the gas pedal to bring it down to idle.It will be at around 2000 when you pull up to a stop sign.Punch it a little and it drops down to a nice smooth idle.Could be linkage or internal?Have liberally lubricated, but it hasnt helped. But shes running smooth and no hesitation. :D

Carbs can be fun to play around with, you can basically figgure them out . The acc pump diaphram is chump too! If the binding accelorator is in the carb, I have had to replace the return spring before, find one with two springs one inside the other. One of these days I hope to have two running Fiats.
