Sam Visits Victoria, Canada

Post by launieg »

I found Sam waiting patiently in the green mailbox at the end of our road on Monday. Funny

way for the fellow to travel! We were glad to see him though, and he'll be hanging out here

until the bus leaves this Monday. (Yes, we figured he'd like to travel by bus this next leg

of his journey.)

As soon as he saw one of our apple trees, we could see he was hungry. Reminds me of another

bear in another apple tree...

Image

It was hard to get him off the subject of food? Have any of you been feeding him bear food?

I think not !

Image

We headed into town yesterday, and stopped at our favourite coffee joint. "The Stick in the

Mud". (Sam had an espresso, and was kinda wired for the rest of the day.)

Image

Sam had seemed a little down when he arrived. We figured maybe he needed to know that the

good ole U.S.A. was not far away, so we went down to the Sooke Harbour and looked across the

basin at the mountains on the Olympic Peninsula (in Washington State, northwest of Seattle

for those of you who don't know the west coast.) He seemed reassured, although I think I saw

a tear in his eye. Or maybe it was a bit of rain....

Image

Sam, had spotted the horses in our back field, and was feeling brave, so my wife saddled up

Secreto. I think the look on Sam's face tells the story! 8)

Image

Image

Sam looked pooped after all the excitement, so we sat and watched TV with the gang. Then off

to bed.

Image

Today, Sam spent quite a lot of time painting the '81 Spider. I'm a little afraid to look at

the results...

Image

Anyway, Sam disappeared for the evening. I've had a rough week with work and a cold to

contend with, so I agreed to let him go out on his own. I sure hope he stays out of trouble,

'cause we have a trip to downtown Victoria in the plans tomorrow before he heads out on

Monday...

Sam - Glad to see you made it. You look right at home with the animals. Will you be going to the Empress for high tea?

Sam, I was so worried about you at the beginning of your adventure but now I'm jealous! You get to hang around all these awesome places and meet all these great Fiat people. Your cousin Fred will be glad to know you've been eating healthier too. He was worried about that American belly pooch you had acquired from eating so many hamburgers.

I'm sure Sam is missing "Mom", but it sure looks like he's enjoying himself. And besides, if it's raining all the time back home, he can get out a lot more being on the road. Great pics Launie.

I don't know where Sam went last night, but he seemed pretty content this morning. I found him doing a little reading. I was not surprised at his choice of reading material. Apparently, he would rather ride in Fiat Spiders rather than work on them.

Image

Somehow, Sam heard that somebody  suggested he go to the Empress Hotel for High Tea. He was disappointed to discover that bears are not allowed. (A cougar was found prowling the grounds a couple of years ago, and I guess they clamped down on wild animals in the tea room ...) Nevertheless, he enjoyed seeing Victoria's inner harbour on a fine Fall day.

Image

Sam could not resist the Belgian Waffle vendor. We had two each... delicious.

Image

Here is a higher view of the same spot when one of the classic car shows was on. Wait a minute! That was months ago, and I don't remember Sam being there!

Image

Sam headed off on the bus, possibly to seek out fame and fortune. We will miss him. He was certainly an excellent guest. He even apologized for the bear that ran away with a bag of our garbage in the spring.

i finally persuaded the local law enforcement to leave us alone... there is still an issue about a missing bunny here in Branch County. could that be where Sam went "after hours"??

Launie, a cougar prowling the grounds a couple of years ago... Janyce and I were married there almost 11 years ago, no shortage of cougars prowling about at that time  (I do remember the 4 legged story though)

Got a call from the bus company, sounds like they have a package that is making a bit of a racket. :D

Chris,

I have no idea what that noisy package is about. The last I saw of Sam, he was happily sitting up front chatting to the driver (as per the photo). Hmmm...

Oh THOSE cougars! Those come off the cruise ships.

Mike, they might escape from wedding receptions, but for sure they do come off the cruise ships. This is a typical photo of the way the terminal looked this year. Roughly 140 ships due for this year alone, and the terminal is only about a half mile from the downtown and the Empress Hotel (as per the photo with Sam). Needless to say, the downtown merchants like the business.
