ADFA problem...where are you carb guys??

Post by ga.spyder »

This is kinda odd.I bought a new'turtleback' low restriction air filter from Pierce Manifold(really nice people).Looks great, excellent fit .The response from the carb is really much improved. And the sound..WOW..when the secondary kicks in the growl is too cool!!
Th problem, the car doesnt want to idle.Push in the clutch at a stop sign and she dies. Was fine before and I didnt touch a thing.I drove the car for 2 hours on Sat.,it's longest stint to date.No real issues. This started when I put the filter on :?: Can the added air affect the mixture enough to cause this.I had a similar issue when I got the car and the jets were gunked.
Also, could someone give me a baseline on how far the idle mixture screw should be adjusted out.I have played with it a little to no avail.I want to remove it and clean it all.
thanks,Craig

Maybe it's getting too much air? When I changed the air filter on my Harley. I had to rejet it to get it to run right. I haven't messed with these carbs yet.

I think two turns out is the recommended starting point for the idle mixture screw.

I recently went through my carb while trying to troubleshoot an non-related issue

Check for power at the idle stop solenoid. It should click if the ignition key is turned on and you unplug/replug the wire (engine not running).

You might have knocked something down the carb while swapping the filter. The air bleed for the idle circuit is very small and easily plugged. Unscrew the idle stop solenoid and use a blast of compressed air to blow it clear. Don't do this if the carb top is off and there is fuel in the bowl. Don't ask

Make sure the secondary is closing completely. Mine was occasionally hanging up and didn't close properly. I found the throttle plate was worn and causing it to not close. If it doesn't close, it can lean out the mixture.

Thanks guys.I checked the solenoid, its OK.I am going to clean out the jets tonight.I think I got something in there when swapping.I cant imagine the extra air could throw it out that much,but....

Craig, I have heard of carb problems by overtightening breather bolts. To adj the air mix, get her good and warmed up, and turn the screw in untill it runs rough, then back it out slowly to find the sweet spot. Also double check all clearance issues with the new set-up.

It appears that something got in the idle system, when I was swapping units.I took the idle solenoid, both jets and the idle mixture screw out.Sprayed it down w/ carb cleaner, then blew it all out with air.She is idling fine again.Hey...I am starting to like these carbs after all  At least they are a cheap fix!!
